Description

F. FRANCE. WELL DRILL.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 8, 1910.
1,022,472. Patentad Apr. 9, 1912.
FRANK FRANCE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WELL-DRILL.
Application filed August 8, 1910.
T0 aZZ w7wm 2'75 may concem:
Be it known that I, FRANK FRANCE, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain neW and useful Improvements in VVell-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drills and particularly t0 Well drills, and l1as for its object to provide a drill 01: this kind that is novel in construction, simple and easy in its operation and very efficient in its work.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a drill that Will also act as a conveyer and Will take out vvater as well as earth.
Vith these and other objects in view, Which will be more fully described in the following specification, I have constructed a drill of the character described, which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which, A
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a drill and operating means shown part-lv in section, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a collar, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line AA Fig. 1 looking clown, Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the lower part of the drill, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation et the drill showing one section partially removed.
Like reerence characters indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing and in the specification in Wh1Ch 1 indicates a cylinder having a removable section 2 which is held in position by a member 13 having a portion of its upper edge recessed to receive the lower end thereof. and a collar 5, having a ohannel 6 therein, which is adapted to engage the pin 7 on the neck 8 so as to permit the collar t0 slide clown over the reduced part 9 of the section 2 after which it is given a slight turn thereby being locked against vertical movement.
In the bottom part of the cylinder 1 is a ring 10 to Which are hinged two doors 11 and 12 which close of their own weight but which Will be forced open by inooming earth or water. To the ring 10 is secured a member 13 having a cutting edge 14 on the bot tom thereof. To the upper part of the cyl inder is fastened a bifurcated supporting member 15 Which terminates in a neck 8, having a reclucedscrew threaded upper portion 16.
A connecting member 17 having an en- Specification of Letters Patent.

larged end 18 with a screw threaded portion 19 in the bottom thereof for engagement with the screw threaded member 16, has an enlarged upper encl 20. The enlarged end 18 has a bearing 21 which acts as a stop for the drawing member which consists of the tube 22 which has a hollow plug 23 screw threaded to its lower end, through vvhich passes the connecting rod 17. The tubular member 22 is provided with slots 24 at one or more places thereon, so as to permit of the outfiow of any water that gets into the tube.
The object of the removable section 2 is to permit of entirely closing the cylinder in case water or slush is being taken from the bore.
Vhere clay or sandy soil is being removed the section 2 is not used, it not being neces sary as the soil Will pack in the cylindrical member and be held therein by the curved walls thereof and the device can be more easily emptied.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A well drill consisting of a cylindrical member having a longitudinal section removable therefrom, and a cutting member on the bottom thereof, said cutting member being removable, a locking member, the upper portion of said cylindrical member and removable section being reduced to receive said locking member.
2. A well drill consisting of a cylindrical member having a longitudinal section removable therefrom, and a cutting member on the bottom thereof, said cutting member being removable, a locking member, the upper portion of said cylindrical member and removable section being reduced to receive said locking member, said locking member consisting of a collar.
3. A well drill consisting of a cylindrical member having a longitudinal section removable therefrrom, a cutting member on the bottom thereof, said cutting member being removable, a locking member, the upper portion of said cylindrical member and removable section being reduced to receive said locking member, said locking member consisting of a collar, and means for fixing said collar in engagement with said cylindrical member and removable section.
4. A vvell drill consisting of a cylindrical member having a longitudinal section removable therefrom, a eut-tng member on the member and removable section, and olosures bottom thereof, said cuttng member beng for the bottom of said eylndrcal member. 10 removable, a locking member, the upper In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, portion of said cylindrical member andrein presence of two wtnesses.
movable section beng reduced t0 reeeive FRANK FRANCE. said locking menfloer,- sad 10cking member Witnesses: consisting of a collar, means for fixing said JAMES OSHAUGHNESSY,
