- This invention is for a bailer bottom and is a division of my pending application for patent for a bailer bottom and method of manufacture, Serial No. 361,886, filed February 27th, 1920, patented J an. 24, 1922, No. 1,404,487. It is an object of this invention to provide a bailer bottom wherein a cylindrical valve seat member has a valve member projecting therethrough longitudinally and having an enlarged lower portion which when the valve member is raised, prevents the valve head from striking against the walls forming the bailer tube or casing, thus obviating wear or injury to said casing.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SLOAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Bailer Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,,clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is for a bailer bottom and is a division of my pending application for patent for a bailer bottom and method of manufacture, Serial No. 361,886, filed February 27th, 1920, patented J an. 24, 1922, No. 1,404,487. It is an object of this invention to provide a bailer bottom wherein a cylindrical valve seat member has a valve member projecting therethrough longitudinally and having an enlarged lower portion which when the valve member is raised, prevents the valve head from striking against the walls forming the bailer tube or casing, thus obviating wear or injury to said casing.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a bailer for cleaning deep wells provided with a valve member constructed to prevent the same from contacting and injuring the bailer tube.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a bailer having a bottom of simple and improved construction which will not contact or injure the bailer walls.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the dis closures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a vertical bore or well having a bailer engaged therein equipped with an improved bailer bottom embodying the principles of this invention.

As shown on the drawings:
' The reference numeral 1 indicates earth or rock having a' well 2 bored or drilled. therein. Hangingin the well is a bailer comprising a cylindrical casing or tube 3 having a handle or bail4 secured to the upper end thereof. 'Attached to the bail 4 is a cord or cable 5 which passes over a pulley 6 to a hoisting apparatus (not shown) The pulley 6 is supported by a framework 7 above the well The bailer bottom embraces a valve member and a valve seat member. The valve seat member comprises a cylindrical collar or sleeve 8 having an integral inturned flange 9 at the upper or inner end. A valve seat 10 is formed in the flange 9. A shoulder 11 is formed near the lower end of the sleeve 8 to engage against the lower end of the bailer tube 3, thereby preventing the sleeve 8 from being driven upwardly into the tube 3. Rivets 12 or other suitable means are used for rigidly attaching the sleeve 8 to the bailer tube 3.
The valve member projects longitudinally through the valve seat member 8 and comprises a valve head 13 having integrally formed on the bottom thereof a valve stem embracing a plurality of ribs 14 preferably four as illustrated. The ribs 14 are disposed at right angles to one another and are wider at their lower ends than at their upper ends to prevent the valve member from being removed from the valve seat member. The tapered construction of the valve stem ribs 14 permits the valve member to be moved into an open position as shown'in Figure 3, in which position the lower ends of one or, more of the ribs contact the inner surface of the sleeve 8 while other of the ribs engage the valve seat to hold the valve head 13 free from contact with the bailer tube 3. One pair of the valve stem'ribs 14 are extended 100 downwardly to provide a tail-piece or agitator 15 adapted to contact the bottom of the bore 2 as shown in Figure 1 to open up the valve and also serve as a means for agitating any sand or other materials which may have 105 accumulated in the bottom of the well.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not 110 purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bailer bottom comprising a valve member embracing a valve head having a plurality of integral tapered ribs thereon disposed at right angles to one another to form a valve stem, a sleeve through which said valve stem projects, and a flange on said sleeve having a valve seat therein for receiving the valve head seated therein.
2. A bailer device comprising a bailer tube, in integral valve consisting of a valve head and a stem comprising longitudinal tapered ribs disposed at right angles to one another and'of difierent lengths, and a ring member secured in the bottom of said tube having a valve seat therein adapted to receive the valve head seated thereagainst when the valve is closed, while the enlarged ends of said ribs hold the ring member? against removal from the stem, the ribs of which are adapted to contact the inner surface of the ring member When the valve is pen to hold the valve head out of engagement with the bailer tube.
3. A bailer bot-tom comprising a sleeve, a flange integral therewith having a valve seat therein, a valve head adapted to seat against said valve seat, a plurality of tapered integrally connected ribs formed on said valve head at right angles to one another and projecting longitudinally through said flange and through said sleeve, said valve head and ribs being of sufiicient size to hold said sleeve against removal therefrom, and a tail-piece integrally formed on the ends of two of said ribs.
