Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct, 21 1919,
r ApplicationfiledApril 2,1917. Serial 1%. 159,246.
To (152 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rnnus D. Donns, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Humble, in the county of Harris and 'State of. Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Samplin Devices, of
which the following is a spec' cation. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a sampling device.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described whereby samples of formation may be withdrawn from the bottom of the'bore, during drilling operations.
In the process of boring a well it is often desirable to obtain samples of formation through which the drill bit is passing and the device herein described has been con structedfor the purpose of obtaining such samples without interference with, or stopping, drilling operations.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
The figure shows a vertical sectional view of the device.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 refers to a tubular member, the upper end of which is provided with a bail 2- to which the suspending cable 3 is attached. Within this member is a valve 4 which permits the .fluid to pass upwardly therethrough but closes the said member against a downward passage of said fluid. The lower end 5 of the tubular member is reduced so as to pass through a central opening in the drill bit and threaded into the lower end of this reduced portion is the tool 6.. The lower end of this tool is beveled,
in below said bit, the tool 6 penetrating the formation below said bit, "and said formation being forced up into the hollow. tubular member. Within the tool 6 are a plurality of flexible fingers 8 which project upwardly and are inwardly inclined. These fingers en age under the sample forced up into the tu ular member and block the lower end of said member and secure the sample of formation therein so that the same may be lifted to :the surface. may be employed for closing the lower end of the device which may be foundpractical, the fingers 8 being shown only for thepurpose of illustrating one means of closing the same.
What I claim is: i
A device of the character described including a tubular member having a fluid passageway throughout its entire length, and whose lower end 1s reduced, and detachable, a gate 7 tool and whose upper ends are free and curved inwardly, and a bailby means of which said devicemay be suspended.
Any suitable means I 7 5' I said toolwhose lower ends are secured to the In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the-presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
