RELEASE FISHING TOOL FOR WELLS.
Application filed April 30, 1925. Serial No. 26,902.
This invention relates to improvements in fishing tools for wells and it relates more specifically to the novel arrangement and construction of the parts thereof.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a tool of this nature more especially designed to the removal of casing and other objects where it is necessary to shift or release the grip obtained by the tool to another position during removal of the casing or other article from the well.
The invention is so arranged and constructed in the parts thereof that a quarter turn of the tool will release the grip or renew the grip thereof on the object being removed in the well.
With the above objects in view the invention will be better understood by reference to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view, enlarged, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail view.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a cylindrical member 1 secured to a body part 2, the lower part of thebody havin a reduced and threaded end 4 and a shoulder 3. Inside the body is a spring 5 which is seated on a collar 6 and below the collar is an annular shoulder 7 for the purpose of limiting the downward movement of the collar. This collar has formed integrally thereon two oppositely disposed, downwardly projecting arms 8-8, the extremities 9- -9 of which comprise the gripping members for grasping the article to be removed from the well. These members, as will be seen. are provided with sharp inwardly projecting ridges 10--10. The rear of these members are sloped or inclined inwardly as is also the inner periphery of the body 2 at 11, in order to cause the members to be advanced inwardly against the object to be removed when the drill stem or tubing is lifted in the well. It will be obvious that when these gripping members are moved against an object in the well that the spring will permit them to be moved upward against the sloping wall 11 so that a grip may be secured and on a lifting movement of the drill rod or stem the gripping members will take tight hold of the object by moving slightly downward.
A particular object of the invention is to enable the tool to be released from an object while in the well. It may be explained that where a tool or other object is lodged in the well, such object may be wedged between the well casing and a boulder, or otherwise caught, in such a manner that it is sometimes impossible to lift it, hence the necessity of releasing the fishing tool therefrom to obtain a better hold or to remove the tool from the well. This is accomplished in the present invention by lowering the tool and object to permit the gripping members 9-9 to be moved upward under tension of the spring 5 and the tool rotated until the members are within the recesses and they are then turned until stopped by the lugs 9 or 12. The fishing tool can now be removed. After the removal of the tool the slips are reset to rest upon the sloping portion of the tool and out of the recesses, which is accomplished by breaking the tool at the joint and resetting the gripping members or slips by hand.
It should be understood that modifications and changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the invention in keeping with the following claims.
I claim:
1. A tool of the nature described comprising a hollow, cylindrical body with gripping members, said gripping members and said body inwardly sloped to permit the gripping members to be moved upward and downward and arranged to be moved around an object, a recess adjacent said members to permit them to move away from said object, said members adapted to engage an object when not in said recesses.
2. A fishing tool of the character described, comprising a hollow cylindrical body, a collar with downwardly projecting, oppositely opposed armscomprising gripping members, an annular shoulder to limit the downward movement of the collar, a
spring above the, collar to move the collar downward, recesses adjacent the gripping arms to permit the gripping arms to be moved away from the object being removed, and means adjacent said gripping members 10 to stop and limit their lateral movement when in said recesses.
In, testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
BERT LESTER LIGON.
