Description

Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
@ervaar sraa'rrzeraerora Waalre LBArLnR.
Application filed November 7, 1923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLnwiLnND S. BAR- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lavoye, in the county of Natrona and State of Viyoming, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bailers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to those devices knoivn as bailers which arc adapted for the removal of mud, Wat-er and the like loosened during the drilling operation and the removal of which is essential to facilita-te the operation of the drill.
The object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable device which embodies means for permitting the removal of dbris Which may enter the bailer but which cannot conveniently escape through the valve provided therefor.
More specifically the present invention includes the provision of a lateral port and a closure therefor, which latter may be moved to permit access to the interior of the bailer body.
Other features will more clearly hereinafter appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views7 in which:
Figure l .is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a vertical section showing the lower portion of the bailer enlarged.
Figure 3 `is a transverse section through the bailer at approximately the center of the lateral port, showing the sleeve turned to close the port.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the port open, and y Figure 5 is a transverse section through. the fixed collar.
The present invention includes the conventional bailer body A formed of suitable cylindrical tubing and provided at one end ivith the bail or handle a and at the1 oppo-` site end With the valve chamber B. The valve chamber B includes the lower body portion of comparatively heavy material in which is formed the annular valve seat b and the upper elongated reduced portion o, the latter being of substantially the same Weight of material as the body portion A. The upper portion c of this valve chamber is of such diameter as to extend into and fit snugly Within the lower end of the body A and is riveted in such position.
Serial No.` 673,277.
At the junction of the reduced portion c and the valve chamber a shoulder is necessarily formed which abuts against the lower end of the bailer body and projects beyond the outerface of the latter. In engagement with this shoulder, which is indicated by the reference character d, a sleeve is loosely mounted on the lovver end of the bailer body A and its lower end abuts 4against the shoulder l of the valve chamber. For retaining this sleeve in engagement with the shoulder there is arranged the collar F which is riveted in position by rivets f as indicated.
The valve Gr in the valve chamber may be of any desired type and is formed with the elongated valve stem g which comprises a plate of substantially the same diameter as the chamber B, which projects below the bottom of the bailer for engagement with thel bottom of the Well to facilitate the opening operation.
The loiver end ofthe bailer body is formed With a suitable opening /i Which registers with a similar opening i in the upper end of the valve casing to which it is riveted. The sleeve E is also formed with an opening y' which is adapted to be brought into registra-A tion with the openino` ,7L and e' to permit access With the interior of the bailer body to permit the removal of dbris which may accumulate. Obviously the size of these openings Will be governed by the size of the bailer and by facts and conditions existing in the various fields Where drilling is in operation.
The present invention is designed to eliminate the disadvantages present in the operation of the various bailers now on the market and includes a compact article of few parts which attbe same time will fully ansvver all the demands made by the operators and Will save considerable time and labor utilized by the use of the present bailer,
That I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the class described including a tubular body portion formed With a lateral passage, a valve casing including a valve seat, a valve for said valve seat having a single operating member projecting below said casing, a tubular re-enforcing extension formed vvith a lateral passage, extending from said valve casinoP into said body portion and riveted therein, to support same, the lateral passage registering with said lateral passage in the said sleeve being loosely mounted exteriorly of the lower face o' the body portion, abutting said shoulder, and retained in engage- 10 ment with said shoulder by the collar.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CLEVELAND S. BARTON.
