Jan. 12 wie.
G. A. ROBERTSON SAND REMOVING DEVICE Filed March 1925 INVENTOR ATRNEY WITNESS:
Patented Jan. 12, 1926.
i lUurrlso STATES PartnrOFFICE;4 y
`GEORGE A. ROBERTSON, 0F YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.`
SAND-REMOVING DEVICE.
Application filed March 28,V 1925. Serial No. 19,070.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Grenen A. Renner- SoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in SanilRemoving Devices, of which the following is a speeilication.
This invention relates to improvements in sand removing devices and contemplates the provision of a device which may be readily and easily inserted within a well vtubing and upon rotations therein will re move thesand and rust from the bottom of the well and collect the same thereinin order that the entire tool may then be withdrawn with "the sand, rust, or other extraneous matter.
Another object of the invention is the provision of filed cutting blades arranged upon the outer sides of the tool and which when rotated within the well tubing will engage the side walls of the welltubing and convey the sand and rust upwardly along the outer and upper sides thereof and into such passages into the body of the tool.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of oppositely extending helically pitched cutter blades arranged upon the bottom of the device and which will not only cut and removethe sand and rust from the bottom of the well but convey the same into the device through trap doors arranged therein and which will auto1natically close when the tool is given a slight upward pull so that the entire tool may be removed from the well Without danger of the extraneous matter from` again entering the well.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novelfeatures and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
`ln the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of the invention shown inserted within a well tubing. ,j
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 4. y L
Figure 8 is a transverse section taken through the invention as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
Figure 41 is a Similar view taken on line a-t of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the invention. v y y. Y Figure 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character l0 indicates a portion of a well tubing which is of the usual and well known construction and is used primarily for preventing the dirt or other extraneous matter upon the sides of the well opening, tofall within the well and so unnecessarily pollute the water within the well. i p
In order to provide such means as may be inserted within this well tubing 10 in a tripod or derrick upon thesurface above the well in order that the tool may be raised and lowered within the well for removing the matter therefrom or to so restrict the entrance of the tool within the well as may be desired. Arranged upon the outer sides of the tubing 11 and spiraled thereon are cutter blades 17 which extend from the removable closure 13 of the tubing 11 and extend below the end of the same and terminate in oppositely disposed cutting end portions 18 and 19 respectively. These end portions 18 and 19 are adapted to dig' into the bottom of the well and when rotated therein will tend to convey the extraneous matter or the like upwardly upon the upper sides of its blades and in so doing will permit the mud, sand, or other extraneous matter to pass between auxiliary cutter yblades 20 which are struck outwardly from tubing 11 and including an auxiliary closure valve, flap valve, as indicated at 21 which is hinged or otherwise secured to the inner face of the bottom l2 and which will close when the rotation of the tool is stopped and prevent the mud, sand and the like from falling out of the tubing 11.
In the use and operation of' the present invention, it Willbe clearly apparent that upon inserting the tubing 11 into a Well casing 10 or the like, and upon the successive rotations of the tubingr 11 through the instrumentality of the bar 14 and l5, that the spiral cuttingr blades 17 will engage the side walls of the Well pipe 10 in order to remove the rust therefrom and the end portions of the same, namely, the blades 18 and 19 respectivelyT Will engage the bottom portions oit' the Well and convey the mnd, sandf and other extraneous matter colleeted in the bottom of the Well, upwardly upon the blades .17 and between the auxiliary cutting blades 20 and into the tubing 1l. for collection.
It is also manifest that the blades or end portions 18 and 19 respectively when rotated in opposite directions Within the Well, all of the mud, sand and other matter will pass between the same and enter the tubing l1 and past the flap valves Q1 whereby the mud7 sand and the like will. collect in the tubing` 11 and may be withdrawn with the device from the Well and emptied after removing the closure cap 13.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope ot'the appended claims.
Having' thus described my invention what is claimed is:
1. A sand removing device of the character described comprising' a tubular casing including a, bottom and removable closure cap, a plurality of spiraled cuttintr blades arranged upon the outer side walls of the tubing', a plurality ot auxiliary eutting blades struck outwardly from tbe outer side Walls of the tubing and adjacent thil spiraled (':uttinpr blade, and a pair ot oppositely disposed cutter blades arranged upon the bottom ot the tubing and including flap valves arranged therewith suliistantially as set forth.
A sand removing: device for wells and the like comprisinpT a hollow tubing,T includ iner a bottom and removable closure rap therefor, an operating: bar extending; up
'ardly and centrally ironi the closure capi a cross bar secured to the upper end ol the operating bar, a plurality of oppositcly disposed eutt blades spiraled around and e tending the entire length of: the tubing, a plurality ol" auxiliary cutter blades atruel: outwardly from the outer sides of the tubv ingr and arranged in direct proximity to the spiraled cutter blades for removingr suoli extraneous matter as may be collected troni the spiraled cutter blades, and a pair el' oppositely disposed cutter blades arranged upon the bottoni oi" the tubing and adapted to remove the sand lroni the bottoni ol a well and allow the same to pass within the tubingr and held against accidental displarement therefrom.
ln testimony whereof I` allix my signature.
GEORGE A. ROBERISON.
