UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NAPOLEON WQRANCOURT, OFV LEWISTON, MAINE, ASSIGNOR ONF-HALF TO ODULE RANCOURT, OF LEWISTON, MAINE.
LEWIS-BO LT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,582, dated January 13, 1903.
Application led November 13, 1902. Serial No. 131,135. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON W. RAN- COURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county ofV Androscoggin, State of Maine, have invented certain new aud useful Improvements in Lewis-Bolts; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lewis-bolts. It is designed to be used in `a hole of uniform diameter, thus obviating the necessity of drilling holes larger at the bottom than at the top. It is also designed to be used without disconnecting any part of it from the shackle, thus saving much time both in making the hole and in operating the bolt. It consists of two or more cooperating members journaled side by side upon a suitable shaft, one tapering upwardly and the others downwardly. The member which tapers upwardly has its upper end provided with a centrally-positioned hole, through which the shackle-bolt passes and upon which it freely turns. The other member, or each if more than one, has its upper end provided witha vertically-disposed slot, through which the shackle-polt passes, whereby the two members may have longitudinal movement one relative to the other upon the bolt. The firstmentioned member moves at all times with the shackle-bolt; but the slotted member may remain stationary While the other member is moved.
The igure shows a vertical section of my improved lewis-bolt.
In said drawing,Ais a stone; B, a hole therein. The lewis consists of the shackle C, bar D, the upward-tapered member E, pivotally mounted on bar D, and the downwardly-tapered member F, having vertical slot G therein, also mounted upon the bar D.
The operation of my improved lewis-bolt is as follows: The slotted member is drawn upwardly relative to the other untilthe transverse area of the two together is less than the greatest possible area. The two are then inserted in a hole in the stone or other arti- 5o cle to be hoisted, and when force is applied to the shackle the slotted member of the bolt remains stationary and the other is moved upwardly, thus enlarging the transverse area ot the bolt and preventing its withdrawal from the hole by causing it to bind therein with a wedging force.
I have shown my device adapted specially to be used in round holes, because it will oftener be used in holes drilled or bored thus 6o and with only one slotted member; but I do not thereby intend to limit myself in regard to form of the ooperating members or to a single slotted member.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claiml. In a lewis-bolt, two oppositely-tapered members, one pivotally and the other pivotally and slidably mounted upon a suitable shackling-bolt, whereby one may have longi- 7o tudinal movement relative to the other.
2. In a lewis-bolt, two oppositely-tapered members adapted to be placed side by side, one member provided with a round hole and the other with a longitudinal slot, a shackle, and a shackling-bolt passing through said shackle and the hole and slot respectively in said members, whereby one member can be moved longitudinally relative to the other and the transverse area of the two members 8o increased or decreased.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 4th day of November, 190:2.
NAPOLEON W. RANCOURT. f In presence of- ODULE RANCOURT, ELGIN C. VERRILL.
