Letters Patent No. 80,504, dated July 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEEP-WELL TUBES.
tlge clgule nfemh tu in ilgese tettets ateutmn mating Mittu tlge same.
To ALL WHoM 1T MAY `columnar;r y i Be it known that we, ALBERT RHDES and JOHN ADAMS, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland, and in the Stateof'Michigan, bave invented certain nenv and useful Improvements in Well-Tubes; and do hereby declare that the following-is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. I
Iu the annexed drawings, making a part of. this specification, A. represents an ordinary metallic tube for wells, and B represents a tube provided with a suitable number of slots, fz, for the rvater to pass through into said tube andthe tube A. Y v l i The slotted tube B tits into and works in the bottom or lower 'end of the tube A, and has secured to lits lower end the point or barb C, which is provided with two shoulders, or a double barb, fcrthe purpose 'of catching in the earth after the tube has been ldriven to the desired depth, and holding the inner tube, B, when thc Well-tube is pulled up,so as' to leave the slots x open, and thereby allovv the water to-pass or run into the tube.
Inside of the slotted tube B is adjusted a cleaner, E, -constructed with lingers or projections, which work in the slots x, and provided with a screw which is pointed atthe upper end, for the purpose of catching in-tlie thmble-nut F, which'is secured at the end of-.a rod, D, dfsueient length .to reach the bottom of the tube.
When tbe slotsx getclogged up, and it isdesred to clean out the well, the rod D is inserted in the tube A, and' turned, so that the thimblemut F catches on the screw of the cleaner E, which may then be worked up and donn, 'and the earth or solid matter removed from the slots 1v.
The tube Ais prevented from being pulled ventirely olf from the tube B by moans of screws, g, through the slots cv; v
Having thusfully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the kremovable rod D, having a female screw, F, to connect to the screw'upon the cleaner-E, at the lower portion of the slotted .tube B, all constructed to operate'substantially as specified.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing, we have hereunto sot our hands, this 21st day of December, 1867.
ALBERT RHOADES, I, JOHN ADAMS.
