JOHN H. BRUEN, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED METHOD OF SINKING AND TUBING WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,769, dated October 16, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BRUEN, of Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode oi' Tubing' and Sinking Wells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being made to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line x x, and Fig. 3 a similar section on the line y y.
The same letters refer to identical parts.
A is the tubing of the well, extended down in successive joints, as may be necessary. The lower end of the tube is turned in, so as to form a flange, A', which retains a corresponding cX- ternal flange on the internal perforated tube B, which iits within the tubeA and turnsireely. rlhe bit C is attached to the bottom of the internal tube B. It is formed with spiral sides, as shown in Fig. 3, sharpened upon the edges, so as to penetrate and loosen the earth. In
-the base of the internal tube B is formed a socket, C, to receive the correspondinglyshaped point of the rod D, which, passing through, rises above thetubc,and may be turned by any convenient power.
The tube A, the base of which rests upon the shoulder of the bit O, is forced into the ground. The spiral pointed bit, turning in the earth, opens the way for the tubing A.
/Vhen necessary the earth may be rst loosened byturning the bitO by means of the rodD.
When the tubing has been sunk to the required depth it is drawn up, thusprojecting the interna-l perforated tube B through the openings in which the water is introduced to the pump.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
"A tubing and boring bit for sinking and tubing wells, consisting of a tube, A, and internal perforated tube B, to the base of which is attached a spiral bit, C, and having a socket in the bottom ofthe tubeB for receiving the point of the rod D, said severa-l parts being respectively constructed and combined for use substantially as set forth.
