To all whom, it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, AUGUST'D. COOK, a citizen of the United States,- residing at Lawrenceburg, in the .county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certain. new and use` ful Improvements in Tube-'Wells; and 1 do -hereby declare the following to be a full,clear,
pipe, or, in fact, anything that it may be de-` siredto support in a well ata point distant above the strainer or above the bottom of the well, where no straineris used. Heretofore in this class of wells difficulty has' been 'experienced in providing an'efiicient or solid foundation for such parts of a well as. the working barrel, foot-valve, inner pump-pipe, dic., or where any part was placed above the lower end of the pipe or well-tube in that the same was subject to slipping or becoming forced downward farther into the well-tube than'yv'a's desired. By my' invention, however, I avoid these objections, all as will hereinafter appear in the following detail description; and my invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

l 'In practicing myvinvention I preferto construct the support or anchor from a tube, of brass, the same being, of such diameter as to adapt it to readily slip within the well tube v or pipe. Within the lower end of this tubular support o'r-anchor I '.'rnay locate a ring or annulus 4, which is provided with an annular flange or shoulder arranged to receive the wall of the support or anchor, to which it is secured by riveting or in any'other suitable manner. When in position, said ring constitutes a hold, by which the device as a whole can be raised or lowered, a suitable tool beingemployed for this purpose. From its upper end to a point about midway its length the wall of the support or anchor is at intervals provided with longitudinal kerfs -or slits 5, the.v intermediate portions ofthe metal constituting spring-tongues 6, which may be, and preferably are, slightly spread or deflected before the support or anchor is insertedjnto the WelLtube. lThese springtongues may be formed or provided with any desired means for causing` their upper free ends to engage, frictionally or otherwise,with
the inner surface of the pipe or well-tube;` 4but I prefer to rivet -the upper endof each V.of the said vspring-tongues to the reduced shouldered portionof a segmental jawv 7, the presence of which slightly increases the diameter ofth'e anchor or support.V These jaws 7 may have their outer surfaces roughened or serrated, "as at 8,.00 enable them as a whole to-be forced or driven into supporting engagement with the inner surface of the well-tube, in a-manner hereinafter described.
As shown in 'the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, I may employ a metal ring 9, the same forming a hold, as previously described, and in addition constituting a circular frame or formerin that the spring-tongues 10 are in this instance independently formed and con- -v i sist merely of spring-strips riveted or otherwse secured at their lower ends to the ring. Other modifications ofthe support or anchor will readily suggest themselves, and for this reason I would have it understood that Ido not limit my invention to the precise details of construction herein laid down, but hold that I may vary the same in any manner and to any extent within the knowledge of the skilled mechanic; Y
