JAMIE ABERCROMBIE, OF HOUSTON, AND NESBIT M, DUNMAN, OF WEST COLUMBIA, TEXAS.
COMBINATION VELL-PACKEB, AND SETTING-TOOL.
Application led February 6, 1919.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMIE ABERCROMBIE and NEsniT M. DUNMAN, citizens ot the United States, residing' at Houston and lll/Test Columbia, respectively, in the counties of lilarris and Brazoria and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination lWell-Packers and Setting-Tools, of which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and Vuseful improvements in a combination well packer and setting tool.
(lne object of the invention is to provide a well packer ont the character described, which may be interposed between oil and water bearing strata in a well, so as to prevent the interiningling of the oil and water.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. packer ot the character described, which may be readily introduced between two concentric pipes, or between a pipe and the wall of the bore ot a well, between oil and water strata, to prevent the intermingling of the oil and water as above sta-ted, or when placed above the oil strata to force the oil into the pipe through the well screen, and to prevent the same from traveling up through the bore on the outside of the pipe.
A further feature of the invention rcsides in the provision or' mea-ns for setting the packer, said means being removable when the packer is set.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to een tain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement ot parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l, is a. side elevation of the complete device, shown partially in section along the longitudinal center line.
Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, and
F ig. 3, is a side elevation of a modified form of the packer, shown partially in sec-- tion along the longitudinal center line.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1920.
Serial No. 275,325.
figures, the numeral l, refers to a pipe section, whose lower end is externally threaded for engagement with ay well screen., or section oit pipe located beneath the packer, and swaged upon the lower end of this section above said threads is an annular ring 2, whose upper side is formed with an annular groove 3. The upper end of the section 2 is provided with right hand threads 4l, eX tending a considerable distance along its length, and fitted over said upper end is a sleeve 5, which is easily movable alongthe section l. The upper end oi this sleeve has the annular flange 6, whose under face is provided with an annular groove 7 Surrounding the pipe section l, and the sleeve 5, is a packer element 8, preferably formed of fabric, which is wrapped therearound, and is secured in place by means of the spiraled wire 9. The lower and upper ends or" this packer element 8 are seated in, and confined by, corresponding grooves 3 and Y, and the sleeve 5 is ontl suliicient length to protect the packer element 8 against coming into con tact with and hanging upon the threads 4. as the sleeve 5 is forced downwardly, it is obvious that the packer element 8 will be forced to expand out against the surrounding pipe, or the walls of the bore, and will form a liuid tight joint therewith. 'lhreaded upon the upper end of the pipe section l, is a tubular member l0, having the internal lengthwise ribs 11, which are spaced the required distance apart. The numeral l2 reters to an elongated nipple, whose upper end is formed into a. oint member 13, provided 'tor its attachment to the lower end of a string of pipe, and underneath said joint member the nipple is reduced, and formed with left hand threads la, provided for engagement with corresponding` threads l5, formed in the upper end of the tubular member 10. Beneath the threads 14:, the nipple is reduced, and forms a blank, and carries the longitudinally peripheral ribs 16, which are spaced apart therearound, andmof a width to readily pass between the ribs ll, and the upper and lower ends of the ribs ll and 16, are oppositely beveled, as shown in Fig. l.
Before the device is let down into the well, the packer is assembled, as shown in Fig. 1,
