Description

April 26, 1932. J. A. THOMAS REGISTER FOR COLD AND HOT AIR DUCTSY Filed Feb, 15, 1928 ,.6 a Y mm u R Em 0 W. n ma ,A M .s f t m a YPatented` Apr. 26,-193'2 ,Y JOHN A. Tuoi/ras, or ROCHESTER-.NEW YORK REGISTER non com) AND Hom' rivers application mea February 15, 192s. sena; m2511380.
The present invention relates to registers for cold and hot air ducts andan obj ect of the invention is to provide a novel means of connecting the front plate of a register to the the front plate may be shifted in order to 0ccupy a slightly diiferent position from the frame when the latterconnects'vvith a duct which is out of alignment.
1o To this and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations lofV parts, all of which Will be hereinafter de-.
scribed: the novel features` being pointed out in the appended claims. 15 In the drawings: n
Fig. l is a front View showing the 'front plate in dotted lines shifted slightly with reference to the frame in order to line up vertically when the frame is secured to the 2o stack in a position slightly off the vertical;
Fig. 2 is a rear view showing the valve in y position and the frame vertically aligned with the front plate;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of one of the sides of the frame showing the adjustable anchoring device for the front plate;
Fig. 4 is a sectional View showing the manner in which the front plate connects With a frame attached to a stack head on the line eo 4 4, Fig. 6;
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the manner in which the register frame is secured to a stack head on the line 5 5, Fig. 7 Y
Fig. 6 is a view of the register embodying 35 the present invention in place on the Wall;
and 1 Fig. 7 is a View of the open end of the Hue head with the rectangular frame positioned therein. 40. In the illustrated embodiment, 1 indicates the front plate of a register provided With a central grille or open Work. Associated with this front plate is a frame 2 which is rectangular and vhas its sides formed from 45. sheet metal, the flat faces of Which are paral- 'fraine Which connects with. the duct so that leli Vwith the opening of the frame. This franiemaybe secured intothe usual` stack` head 3 by Aainnnber of strips: of duetile*nn-fltal. awlien are secured at 5 to the inner 'face of the stack head', then around the rear-edge 50 Y of: the trarne at -'-and then outvvardly'over' the inneraee of the: frameat'- 8, the outer y end being extendedlat 9" over the forward edge of the frame at 2?, as illustrated in Fig.
5. On the rear` faoeo the front plate l may 55 be pivotally mounted at' 10 a valve .or shutter 1r controlled in any suitable manner. The
`type ot register just described a commercial structure atpresentl in. extensive: use.
The disadvantage of this type of' rstruetare o nowin nseis,` that the name2 is, in many netances, thrown out of alignment, dueto the factthatthe stae'khead/ in which the frame; 2 fits is positioned out of alignment. With the: means heretofore employed fonseeuring- 65 the front plafteito this rectangular registery tranne,- thisl misalignlnfe'nt`4 ofv tl1eregister frame is impartedfto the frontvp'late sothat'-` i the latter also becomes out ox alignment;
. Inthe present invention, a novel meanss 7o provided for connecting the `front plate'l with the rectangular frame in suelaa man` meras to permit the front platet'o be'proper'-- ly positioned or' aligne@notwithstanding the faet that the rectangular frame 2y is out of 75 alignmentr 'Ehi'slmeansfcompiisestvvo align` ing` devices mounted onftwo opposite WallsL of the: frame 2st) as to beiadj'ustable longitudinally oi? saidk walils order' to' be- 'engaged` by asteningdevices 1.2 passed through the front; so
plate limito the anehoringdevices.- v In this'.A embodiment; of the nventionieaeh orf the an-' chtormzg.L devicesernbodiesi an, outwardly eix-L' tending.v aimhorifng flip l3 f' formed with an opening' 14 through which tllLe'. fastening dies -85 vices 12 pass as shown in Fig. 4c.A Backen @homing 'devieea'lsov embodies portionsfmovable ori-:the frame 2 andi tofthis. end the frame 2: is provided a. longitudinally' extend-2 ilrg operating*15]in`v one otitssi'des; through 90'i Y erence to the fraine2 may be changed,'thus permitting the front plate to be lined up in such a manner that it will Vconform to the` condition in which it may'lloe situated. The
screw 12 is tapered, and it is easier to line .Y
up a tapered screw with the openingl 14" andV start the screw, than it isto perform the same Y ing longitudinally of the side, a fastener anchoring device adjustable in said slot, a front plate and ak fastener for securing said front plate to the fastener anchoring device.
5. Thecombination Vwith a Hue head, an
Operation with. a biuntea boit; if the wan 'is' f' of woodit for-,Ins an additional anchoring .means, but in'most cases thevwalls-are of plaster, and :in thatevent Vthe support of the register depends entirely upon the screw engaging thezelement, 18. rlhe adjustment of the register is made, and not until after such adjustment has been made is the screw turned down so that it passes into the wall. l
