umrsn stares BERNARD STEMBER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENER FOB BAGS OR THE LIKE.
Application filed January 10, 1922, Serial No. 528,151. Renewed November 17, 1925.
To all 107mmit aim-y concern."
Be it known that I, BERNARD STEMBER, a citizen of the United'States, residing at New York city. in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Bags or the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bags or the like. The object thereof is to provide improved means for holding the bag closed. In accordance with this object I provide the bag with an improved composite securing means whereby the bag can not be opened to an appreciable extent without a double releasing operation, thus lessening the danger of loss or theft from the bag.
In order that my invention may be better understood attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification. in which- 1 is a side view of a showing one embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same shown open.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. I
As shown in the drawing, the bag 1 is provided with a single mouth along the edges of which is secured a frame 2 of metal or other suitable material and comprising jaws 3 and l which are pivotally connected at 5 so as to permit one jaw to move towards or away from the other into closed or open position. These jaws are adapted to be detachably fastened in completely closed relation by suitable fastening means such as the spring fastener shown. This fastener as shown comprises a member 6 secured to the jaw 3 by springs 7 which yieldingly press the member 6 downwardly towards latching position. The member 6 coacts with a projection 7 on jaw 4. to hold the bag closed, this projection being adapted to snap in back of the lip 8 on the member 6 when the latter is moved upwardly as by the inclined surface 9 on the projection 7. This specific form of fastening device is not part of my invention and any other suitable form of fastening device may be used in place thereof.
Carried by the jaw 3, and preferably by the fastening member 6, is a bridge 10 to which is hinged or pivoted a tab'll prefer ably formed of leather, silk or other suitable flexible material. To prevent objectionable opening of the mouth of the bag the outer end of this tab is provided with means for securing the same to the bag at the other side of the mouth from the jaw 3. As shown, snap fasteners 12 and 13 respectively are carried by the tab and by the bag for this purpose.
It will be seen that the bag cannot be opened to any appreciable extent without releasing both the member 6 and the tab. Even if -the member 6 should become released accidentally, the tab, so long as the outer end thereof is in fastening position, will prevent opening of the bag to any appreciable extent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a bag or the like provided at its mouth with a frame having jaws adapted to be opened or closed, fastening means for holding the jaws .in closed relation, and a member carried by the jaw at one side of the mouth. the combination of additional fastening means for holding the jaws in closed relation including a bridge mounted on said member, a flexible tab pivotally sup ported by said bridge, and means on the bag at the side opposite said bridge and below the frame for securing the outer portion of the tab thereto.
2. In a bag or the like provided at its mouth with a frame having jaws adapted to be opened or closed, and fastening means on the frame for holding it closed in which a member yieldingly secured to one of the jaws co-acts with a projection on the opposite jaw to hold the bag closed, the combination of additional fastening means including a bridge mounted on said yieldingly secured member, a flexible tab carried thereby, and means for securing the outer portion of the tab to the bag below the said frame.
3. In a bag or the like provided at its mouth with a frame having jaws adapted to be opened or closed, and fastening means on the frame for holdingit closed in which a member yieldingly secured to one of the jaws co-acts with a projection on the opposite jz w to hold it closed, the combination of additional fastening means including a bridge mounted on said yieldingly secured member, a flexible tab carried by the bridge, the two parts of a snap fastener being positioned respectively in the bag below the frame and at the outer end of the flexible tab to secure the said tab to the bag. 10
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
BERNARD STEMBER.
