Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 19, 1910.
Application filed. June 17, 1909. Eerie! No. 502,670.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to im rovements in registers and ventilators, partlcularly of the type in which a perforated face plate is employed together with a louver or damper at erated so as to either close the passages t rough that face plate or open them, said louver or damper performing, when open, the function of a deflector arranged to direct the draft of air through the passages in the face plate.
The invention is of particular utility when ventilation is obtained by means of the blower system, since in such a use it is most important to have effective means for controlling and holding the deflector at any desired angle of ad ustment. It is to this feature, namely, the deflector operating and controlling means, that my invention particularly relates.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates on a small scale and in section my invention, the deflector being partially ex tended, said section being taken on the plane of the line X-X Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of a fragment of the face plate and deflector, showing the exposed end of the deflector operating device. Fig. 3 illustrates the connection between the deflector operating device and the deflector, said view being a rear elevation and an edge elevation. Fig. 1 illustrates the deflector operating device, detached.
l is a perforated face plate of any suitable design. 2 is a damper or louver also of any suitable design. The louver is hinged within a shallow box or frame 3, arranged at the border or near the edge of the face plate 1, and at its rear. The louver 2 when closed prevents the passage of air. When the louver 2 is moved to the position indicated in Fig. 1, it not only opens the ventilator, but also stands obliquely across the direction of the draft, so as to cause the air to be deflected forwardly through the openings in the face plate 1. The means for controlling and operating the deflector 2, in its preferred form, comprises a screw 4, having a thread of suitable pitch said screw passing throu h a nut 5,'whic is trunnioned or suitab y mounted to oscillate or rock in an opening of substantially corresponding size 1n the ouver 2. The front end of the screw 4 has a swivel or universal connection with the face plate or main bod of the ventilator. In this particular form 0 the invention, the screw 4 has a ball-like head 6 arranged in a socket 7 carried by the face plate 1. The socket 7 may be formed in any suitable manner. 8 is a slot inthe outer end of the ballllke enlargement 6 suitable to receive a tool like a screw-driver, whereby said screw may be rotated. It will be noted that as the screw is rotated, the nut 5 will travel thereon, and since the latter is connected to the deflector 2,it will impart to the latter a corresponding movement. As the deflector moves away from the face plate 1, the angle of the screw 4 relatively thereto will change, but this is compensated for by the means already described, so that danger of breaks ing the threads or injuring or disturbing the parts is entirely avoided. By this means the deflector 2 is positively controlled, and all chattering or rattling is avoided. In instances where the blower system is employed, the great necessity of having a positive means for operating the deflector is conspicuously manifest, and it is in such connection that my invention has particular value.
Obviously the design of the various parts may be modified in various ways and any appropriate means may be provided at the outer side of the face plate to enable the user to manipulate the screw.
What I claim is:
1. In a register or ventilator, a plate having a draft opening therein, a movable damper at the rear thereof, an operating device therefor comprising a screw member, and an intermediate bearlng device between said screw member and said damper and relatively movable to both whereby said screw member may oscillate relatively thereto.
2. In a register or ventilator, a plate having a draft opening therein, a movable damper at the rear thereof, an operating device therefor comprising a screw member, and an intermediate bearing device between said screw member and said damper and relativel movable to both whereby said screw mem or may oscillate relatively thereto and plate, a louver therefor at'the rear thereof, means to hinge said louver at 'the rear of said plate, an operating device for said louver com rising a screw, a ball-and-socket connection etween said screw and said face plate, the outer end of said ball being exposed for carried b ceive sai screw.
