W. T. TRUAX WARM AIR REGISTER Filed April 23. 192] l,

UNITED STATES PATENT orifice.
WILLIAM T. TRUAX., OF :BATTLE CR-iillili, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES REGISTER COMPANY, F BATTLE GREEK, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHI- GAN.
WARM-AIR REG1STER To all who/m if may concern Be it known that I, liLLmivrrl. TRUAX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and 5 State of Michigan, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in llVarm- Air Registers, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to warm air register constructions. rIhe object of this invention is to provide means for compelling all of the warm air as it comes through the register box to pass through the register front, preventing the streaking or marking and discoloring of the walls of the room next about the register, as is frequently the result where the ordinary register box and register front and the customary arrangement thereof are employed.
This invention comprises the provision of bendable metal strips that are attached to the walls of the box and lie inside the box until after the frame is attached, when the strips are turned over outwardly upon the frame, thus closing` the opening or joint between the box and the frame, and the usual center grating or lattice is then placed upon the strips and secured to the frame in the ordinary manner, and the warm air must pass entirely through the frame and grating or lattice, and cannot leak out sidewise or upwardly between the box and frame, or between the frame and lattice, and streak the adjacent walls or the paper thereon.
In the accompanying drawings are illustrated the construction and arrangement of the parts of this invention.
Of the drawings, Fig. l represents a regis ter box and register frame, front view, the grating or center open-work register plate being removed to show the bendable metal strips and their positions with respect to the opening in the frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the broken line Q-Q of Fig. l, full size, showing the protecting strip bent forwardly and upwardly upon the inner edge portion or border of the side of the frame, and showing also the grating or lattice ar ranged against the turned strip. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section upon the broken line 3--3 of Fig. l, full size, showing the protective strip turned forwardly and outwardly upon the inner side edge or border of the frame about the opening therein, and showing also the edge of the center or lattice arranged on the strip whereby the strip is held between the edge of the lattice and the edge portion ofthe frame.
Throughout the drawings and description the same letter is used to refer to the Same part.
Considering the drawings, the register frame A has formed upon it the raised portion a as shown in Fig. l extending about the usual opening enclosed by the frame, and next to the inner flat edge or border B of the frame. It will be noted that the border edge portion B of the register frame is slightly sunken in order to receive the bendable metal sealing strip hereinafter mentioned` and to also receive and position the register grid or face plate, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. In the common manner, the register frame is secured by the screws o to the register' box referred to generally by the letter C. In Fig. 3 there is shown one of the side walls of the register box and marked D. The l wall comprises two parallel sides of sheet metal connected by a grooved and bent edoe connection CZ. On the inside of the wall the connection d engages and clamps the edge of the bendable metal Strip E, and there is a fellow metal strip e similarly held upon the otherside of the open front of the box as shown in Fig. l. In Fig. l. the protecting strips E and e are shown before they have been turned outwardly upon the edge or border B of the frame. In Fig. 3 the strip E is shown after it has been bent forwardly through the opening in the frame A and upon the border B of the side of the frame A.
Fig. 2 illustrates the top F of the register box C. Like the side wall D, shown in Fig. 3, the top F comprises two spaced sheets of metal having their edges joined by the grooved and bent connection 7". The lower bend of the connection f clamps also the edge of the bendable strip G, and this strip is shown bent outwardly and upwardly upon the flat border B of the top of the frame A. In the top of the register box is the throat g through which the warm air may pass upwardly, when it cannot pass out through the frame A, and the latticed register plate H, by reason of the closing down of the swinging damper or gate J by means of the finger lever In Figs, f2 and 3 it will be noted that the lattice or open-work register front plate H has a ilat flange, edge portion or border la, that corresponds with the border B of the frame in extent, and it will be understood that the border it of the register plate follows the border B yof the fraine for 4the entire distance about Ithe opening in the frame. The border zy is arranged against the strips E, e, and G, and the strips are thus held beu tween the edge of the lattice and the border B of the frame as shown.
The operation oi' this invention is believed to 4bereadily discernible from the drawings and the foregoing explanation. After the frame A is secured to the box 'Bythe strips E, e and 'G are turned outwardly through the opening in the `frame and upon the border B. The open-work register plate or lattice is Athen placed in position. Now, all the warm air must escape through the .ira-ine and .lattice if yfthe gate or damper is swung f inwardly with respect to 'the box, or throu h y. tice are fully sealed and no the throat g inthe top of the box, if t e damper'J is moved to close the openings in the register plate. The joints between thc frame and box and frame and grating or latstreaking follows even after extended and continuous use of registers constructed in accorda-nce with this invention. It will be understood that in heating dwellings or other buildings by means of vwarnrair drawn lfrom the outside, there is unavoidably more or less dust Acarried into the warin air piping system, although'the air Ibe ltaken from ya carefully selected situation, and if there is any opening remaining between the register box and the frame when those parts are finally placed in position, after a time the walls immediately about the frame become unsightly and streaked with discolored radiating marks and patches. VBy adequately Sealing the joint between the trame and box as set forth herein injury to the surrounding Wall surface or paper is eiectually prevented.
Having now described this invention, and explained the mode of its claim is In a warm air register, the combination with a register box having walls comprising parallel sheets of metal, a grooved connecting member having bent edge portions clamping vthe edge portions oi' the said sheets whereby the sheets and the connection am held together, a register frame having an inner sunken border edge portion arranged lati'vise against the bends oit the said cow necting `member, bendable sheet metal sealing strips each having a fiat portion arranged upon the said sunken border portion of the traine and (3o-extensive therewith, each sealing strip having a bent portion passing through the opening in the register frame and a bent portion clamped to one of the said wall sheets by the said 'bent edge portion. ot the connect-ing member, and an open-work front` plate havinfr a Hat edge portion arranged upon the said flat portions oii the sealing strips which lie in the said sunken inner border edge portions of the frame.
In testimony whereof I ailix my si mature.
IVILLIAM T. TR TAX.
