UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. AOKERMAN, OF HOHOKUS, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAPKlN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 185,419, dated December 19, 1876 application filed June 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. AGKERMAN, of Hohokus, in the county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain improvements in Napkin-Holders, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide for an improved holder for a napkin, when the same is held in front of a person while eating, in order to protect the clothing and be within convenient reach for use. By the use of such a holder the napkin is stretched over the breast, and the holder is so constructed that it can be attached to and removed instantaneously from the napkin, as well as to and from clothing of the person using the said holder.
My in vention consists in constructing a napkin-holder of metal, wood, rubber, whalebone or any other flexible material. The holder is constructed in the form of a flat bow, having both ends pointed or turned into hooks, as may be desired. To the center and upper part of this bow is attached a flattened hook. In order to attach the holder to a napkin the bow is first bent or contracted. It is then placed near the border of the napkin, and the pointed ends of the how are inserted into the fabric of the same. The bow is then allowed to spring back to its original shape, which action stretches the napkin smoothly across the bow, and holds it to the same. The holder with the napkin thus attached is then placed over the breast of the person using the same,
and is held there by slipping the hook attached to the center and upper part of the bow over the collar or Shirtband.
In order to more fully describe my invention, I refer to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a front view of my improved napkin-holder. Fig. II is a sectional view of the same taken on line :v at, Fig. I.
A is the bow with the pointed ends a b. C is the hook attached to the center and upper part of the bow A. D is the napkin.
Having thus described my invention, 1 desire to claim- A napkin-holder constructed of the bow A, with the pointed or hooked ends a and b, and the hook O, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed this 8th day of June, 1876.
JOHN J. AOKERMAN. Witnesses:
