JAMES H. BISSELL, OF ROCHESTER DEPOT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLANES FOR CHANNELING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 185,281, dated December 12, 1876; application filed August 11, 1876.
the following to be a full and correct descrip tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken at as :10, Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of a strap channeled by my machine.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool for the use-of harness-makers, to enable them the more readily and perfectly to channel the edges of straps in constructing rounds used for reins for harness. It consists in providing astock or plane with two adjustable cutting-knives, which are placed in the angles of a groove in the bottoniof the plane through which the strap passes, thereby channeling the edges. The stock is divided and made adjust-ably apart, by which any width of strap may be channeled.
in the drawings, A and A represent the plane stock made of cast metal or other material. The part A has a thumb-screw, B, passing through it and freely revolving therein; and the part A has a thread out in a hole passing through it for the admission of the screw B. By this means the parts A and A may be drawn together or separated and held as desired. To guide the parts A and A more perfectly and keep them steady, arms 0 0 project from the part A and pass through the part A, one on each side of the screw B. These arms may be graduated to indicate the distance apart of the knives. It is plain that other means may be used to separate, guide,
angles of a groove, I, cut in the bottom of the plane. The groove I is out one half in the part A of the stock, and the other half in the part A and it is intended for the admission of the strap to be channeled. v
The operation of my machine is evident. The parts A and A having been adjusted apart by means of the screw 13 and guidearms 0 to the width of the strap to be channeled, which may be indicated by a scale upon the arms 0, the plane is passed over the strap, the knives entering and cutting the upper edges and channeling the strap, as shown at Fig. at.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A portable hand-plane provided with a groove in its bottom, with oblique knives arranged in the manner described, so as to enter the angles of said groove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a plane having a groove in its bottom and knives-arranged in the manner described to channel leather, I claim the combination of the divided stock A A with the thumb-screw B and arms 0, substantially as set forth.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Rochester this 20th day of August, A. D. i876.
