LAWN TRIMMER.
No. 470,950. Patented Mar. 15, 1892.
UNITED STATES MATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. RICE, OF FARMINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
LAWN-TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,950, dated March 15, 1892.
Application filed September 2, 1891. Serial No- 404,540. (No model.)
To all whom it 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY C. RICE, of Farmington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Trimmers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lawn-trim mers; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combina tion and arrangement of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to construct a machine which is adapted to trim the edges of paths and flower-beds, and which is very compact, being supported on one wheel and within a single frame.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved machine. Fig.2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view taken from the under side of the machine, showing the position of the cutting-plate K. Fig. 4. is a sectional view on line a: 00 of Fig. 2.
A represents a wheel, which bears upon the ground and which is provided with the central projection 13. The frame C is supported on the wheel A by means of the inwardly-projecting bolt D, which bears in an opening in the projection B. The inner side of the frame is provided with flanges E, which form bearings for the shaft F. Mounted upon the shaft are the heads G, to which the knives H are secured. On one end of the shaftF is the pinion H, which engages the cogs I on the inner side of the wheel A. Supported within the frame upon the projecting bolts J is the cuttingplate K, against which the knives hear when cutting the grass. The pitch or angle of the plate is regulated by the set-screwsL M, which bear against the opposite sides of the plate. By means of this construction it will be seen that a perfectly-fiat plate can be used, being held in any desired adjustment by the setscrews. The forward end of the inner side of the frame is turned upward to form a nose N,
and to the rear end of the frame is secured a handle in any suitable manner.
In operation the wheel isrun along the path near its edge. from being stopped suddenly by an obstruction, giving it a tendency to pass or slide over between the knives and the plate K.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a lawn-trimmer, the combination, with a wheel provided with cogs on one side, of a frame supported on the wheel, a knife-carrying shaft journaled in the frame across the axial line of the said wheel, a pinion on said shaft which is engaged by the cogs of the wheel, and a stationary cutting-edge, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a lawn-trimmer, the combination, with a frame and a wheel journaled in one side of and Within said frame, of bearings formed on the opposite inner side of the frame, a knifecarrying shaft j ournaled therein in a line with the path traveled by the trimmer and which is revolved by the said wheel, and a stationary cutting-edge, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a lawn-trimmer, the combination, with a frame and a cogged wheel j ournaled therein to one of its sides, of a knife-carrying shaft also journaled within the frame across the axial line of the said wheel, a pinion on the said shaft which is engaged by the cogged wheel, cutting-edge K, and set-screws L M, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a lawn-trimmer, the combination, with the frame, a wheel journaled therein, and a knife-carryingshaft operated by said wheel, of projections J, cutting-edge K, adapted to rest on said projections, and set-screws L M, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. RICE.

any unevenness that may exist in the ground. As it is thus run along the projecting grass on the edge of the lawn is cut by being caught The nose N prevents the frame
