J. BURGE.
WOOD CUTTER.
Patented Sept. 11, 1883.
VVzfnesses.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BURGE, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WOOD-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent No. 284,944, dated September 1-1, 1883.
Application filed December 27, I882. (NomodelJ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BURGE, of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in a food-Gutter for Cutting Wood for Paper-Pulp and other Uses, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in machines for preparing wood for use in making paper-pulp; and it consists of a stock of peculiar form provided with a bit and two upright knives, and means for moving said bit and knives along the surface of a log of wood, whereby said log is reduced to thin portions of the same length and thickness without injuring the fiber of the wood.
The arrangement and construction of the various parts of my invention I will now proceed to point out and describe.
In the drawing the figure is a perspective.
, Referringto said drawing, A is the stock which holds the bit and upright knives.
B is an adjustable bit for cutting the wood any desired thickness.
O O are knives for cutting the wood the desired length. Said knives cut across the grain of the wood.
D is a log of wood, on which the bit B and knives G O operate.
F F are flanges on each end of the stock A.
E is a lever, which is bolted to the flanges F, and is used to hold the stock against the surface of the log.
G is a screw passing through the lever E, which screw is operated by pulleys or other suitable means and moves the lever and stock along the surface of the log D.
H is a weight attached to the lever E, and serves to hold the stock A firmly against the log.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The stock A is held firmly against the log D by the lever E and weight H. The log D is then revolved by any suitable means and the bit B and knives O O engage with and cut into said log D. The screw G being turned moves the stock back and forward along the surface of the log, thus cutting the wood into portions of the desired length and thickness.
Having thus fully explained my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The stockA, having the flanges F, adjustable bit B, knives G C, the lever E, secured to the flanges F, and having the weight H, in combination with the screw G, and means for operating said screw, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
JOHN BURGE.
