WITNESSES: INVENTOR W ATTORNEY ii an STATES idnrnnr @hhllillie SAMUEL F. KRESS, OF MONTEREY, ASSIGNOR TO ALVA l). COYE, OF HORNBY, XEYV YORK.
WABBLE-SA'W.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,322, dated June 10, 1884.
Application filed May 3, 1884.
To a-ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. Knnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mon terey, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vabble-Saws or Saws of Irregular Shape, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved device for making irregular forms moldings and the like-and the novelty consists in the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
I propose to provide a device which shall be simple and comparatively inexpensive of 1 manufacture, readily adjustable to form various shapes, and which shall be durable in service.
The principle of the invention extends to any form of wabble-saw which has teeth upon only a portion of its surface, and which has teeth arranged at different distances from the center of motion of the spindle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use the invention, 1 will describe the construction and mode of operation of the same, referring for that purpose to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this spccilication, and in which llf igure l. is a side elevation of the device in position to form a molding; Fig. 2, a detail view showing the different parts of cutters and collars ot'l ig. 1 detached, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation corresponding to Fig. 2. Fig. l is an enlarged view of one of the saws, show in g the teeth arranged at different angles.
"inferring to the drawings, I will describe the construction illustrated; but it is obvious that the form of saw or cutter, the arrangein cut of the teeth, and the number of saws used may be varied, and all the advantages of the principles involved be obtained.
A designates a table, which is provided with an adjustable guide, a, by means of which the work is presented to an d held to the cntters, and having also bearings a for a vertical spindle, 13, having a pulley-connection, 7), with a belt power, not shown,) and a collar, as 1).
(Model) Keyed to the spindle 13, above the collar 1), is a removable collar, C, which has a beveled upper surface, 0, which forms a bearing for a wabble-saw, D. This saw has its teeth (1 arrangedverticallyor nearly so; but those teeth shown at d are farther from the axis of motion than the teeth shown at (1 Thus the teeth at the point (1 extend farther into the blank than the others, and may serve to cut an oval groove or rounded under-cut, or the like. The journal of this saw D is upon an incline corresponding with the incline which it is to assume, and is held by a collar having both upper and lower surfaces beveled, as seen details nnry be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my invention, the essential element of which is wabble-saws with teeth at different angles, arranged at different distances from the axis of motion, secured to a vertical spindle by beveled collars, and adapted to be readily interchangeable, and to serve for the purposes set forth.
I am aware that wabblesaws have been be fore constructed with teeth at various dis tances from the axis of motion, adapted to cut curved surfaces, as moldings; and also that beveled collars have been used to give such saws a bearing. These features are therefore not relied upon. I attach importance to the formation of the teeth at different angles, so that those farthest from the axis of motion will give a draw-cut upon the wood'beiug acted upon.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. \Vabble-saws of irregular form, having upon a portion of their surfaces teeth of varying angles, arranged at different distances the axis of motion, the whole adapted to serve 10 from the axis of motion, adapted to serve with in cutting irregular formsfas set forth. a revolving spindle and beveled collars, as In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in and for the purposes set forth. presence of witnesses.
