Description

l'nited $513125 ADOLPH PFAFF, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Letters Paten-t No. 104,878, dated June 28, 1870.
Mw Y IMPRiOVED MACHINE FOR CUTTING FAT, cc.
bw-*M*- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom vit may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH PFAFF, of the city and connty'of Baltimore, in the Stateof llaryland,`
, to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaz'companying drawing making part of this specification, in whiche Figure 1 is a central vertical section.
'Figure 2 is a top view.
, Figure 3 is an end view.
The nature of my invention consists` in a peculiarl arrangement and operation of devices for cutting fat, 85e., first into slices, then into strips, and finally into squares or cubes, and delivering them int-ova receptacle prepared forthem.
In a'lcox4 or casing, A, made of any suitable form and dimensions, .and ot' any suitable material, a shaft, B, is jonrnaled, and attached to this shaft is a series of circular knives, O. Y
At a suitable distance from, and parallel with, the shaft B, is another shaft, D, provided with a cylinder, E, having on Iits face a set of grooves, c, at distances corresponding with the distance apart of the knives C, and so placed that the kniveseuter the grooves as they revolve toward each other, as indicated by the arrows. f
Just below t-he shafts B and D are-two shafts, H `and K, placed at right angles with those above them.
On` the shaft H is a series of knives, I, arranged like those above described,` and on the shaft K is a cylinder, J, having grooves j formed on its face, and the knives I and groovcd cylinder J engage with'each other inthe manner above described. The bearings for the journals of the shafts B, D, H, and K are elongated, as shown at lin fig. 1, so that, when the knives and cylinders become worn, they may he adjusted nearer to each other.
The cylinders E and J may be made of wood or metal, as desired.
They are provided with small pinsor project-ions 1), to assist in carrying down the fat, 86e., as they revolve.
The knives 0 are provided with a cleaning device,' M, consisting ofa piece of wood or metal, with slits formed in it, and placed so as to clean the knives as' they revolve, after cutting the fat, Ste.
lBelow the shafts H and K is a tube or trough, O, the inner end of which is near the point of contact of the knives I and cylinder J From thence the trough is curved downward and outward, and terminates at one end or side of the box or casing A.
The upper side of the trough O is formed with slits which serve to clean the knives I.. Y
On a shaft, R, which may hethe ina-in or drivingshaft, is a knife, S, attached atits center, so as to form two curved blades, as shownv in iig. 3, and arranged so as 'to pass the outer end of the trough O at every revolution.
A cleaning device is also provided for this knife, and may consist of a piece of wood or metal, with a slit formed in it, placed so that the blades will pass through the slit at every revolution.
The shafts B, D, H, K, and O are connected by suitable spur-and-bevel gearing, so as to operate simultaneously.
The operation is as follows:
The fat, &c., is fed into the hopper V, where it is carried down by the cylinder E, and is cnt intoslices by the knives C. The slices then fall upon the cylinder J, and the knives I cut them at right angles, forming strips.` The strips then pass into the trough O, and, as they are forced ont at `its end, they are cnt into squares or cubes by the knife S, andy fall into a suitable receptacle prepared for them.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is
1. The series of revolving knives C and revolving block E, with projecting points p and grooves e, in combination with shafts B and D, frame A, and crankV R, constructed and arranged as shown and described. 2. The series of knives I, in combination with cutrting-block J and j, with its cleaner M, as shown and described.
3. In combination with the above, the revolving S-formed knife S, the conducting-trough O, in combination with the devices for imparting motion, all as shown and described.
Witnesses: ADOLPH PFAFF.
