PATENT OFFIon.
AUGUSTUS A. HAGEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. I
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CUTTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,636, dated October 11, 1875; application filed- August 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS A. HAGEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco- Outting Machine, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 rep resents a front View; Fig. '2, a vertical transverse section, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section on line a; .r, Fig. 1, of my improved tobaccocutting machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g parts.
My invention has reference to an improved machine for cutting tobacco in rapid and easy manner; and it consists of a cutting-knife, to which a diagonal shear-cut is imparted by a compound slide mechanism.
In the drawing, A represents a cutter-supporting standard with feed-opening for the tobacco, in front of which the reciprocating cutting-knife B is guided. The slotted cutter B is adjustably secured, by set-screws a, to a horizontallysliding plate, 0, that is guided in the dovetailed groove of a vertically-sliding cutter-plate, D, which moves along dovetailed vertical guide-strips b of standard A. The
vertically-sliding cutter-plate D is operated by a crankrod and crank connection with the driving-shaft, and arranged to impart motion to the horizontally-sliding cutting-plate G by a pivotal link, d, a fulcrumed elbow-lever, e, and a second pivot-link, f, which connects the shorter arm of the elbow-lever with the 'horizontally-sliding plate 0. The simultaneous motion of both cutter-plates by means of the connecting parts produces diagonal motion of the cutter, and thereby a very effective shearcut that cuts the tobacco or other article with great'rapidity, requiring less power than the common cutters at present in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a tobacco-cutter, of the horizontally-sliding plate 0, carrying cuttingknife B, the vertically-movable plate or'head D, and the link or levers 01 cf, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
AUGUSTUS A. HAGEN.
