IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-CUTTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,010, dated November 16, 1875; application filed August 7, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER MOI. MCLEOD, of Sun Prairie, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Corn-Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making-a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my corn-cutter, open; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in corn-cutters which are adapted to be'used by hand; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the convex grooved handle, in combination with a pivoted adjustable sickle-shaped blade, having perforations, and a thumb-screw or pin for securing the adjustment, as will be hereinafter more fully shown and described.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents the convex helve or handle of my improvedcorn cutter, the upper portion of which is designed to be slotted through from front to back, as shown 'at a. Below the end the convex edge is grooved, as indicated at b. The adjustable sickle-shaped blade, which I designate by the letter B, is fastened permanent y into the slot at by means of a rivet, b, in such a manner that it can be opened out at any angle to the helve or handle. Several adjusting perforations, b b, are designedto be made through the enlarged end of the blade,

said perforations being arranged at equal distances from the rivet b. 0 represents a thumbscrew, fitting in holes made through the helve, corresponding to the perforations b b, and intended to screw the blade B at any angle desired by the operator.

It will be seen that the object of this invention is to provide a means by which the blade of a corn-cutter may be adjusted at any desired angle with the helve, and whereby it may be shut up like a pocket-knife, and so secured when not intended for use. When thus closed the cutting-edge is protected from rust or other injury. The thumb-screw 0, when not used for adjusting the blade, will, when the blade is shut up, fit immediately against the rear end 2 of the blade, thereby locking it permanently, and preventingit from being opened. In this way a very awkward and dangerous implement may be rendered convenient and entirely harmless during transportation.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A corn-cutter handle having a convex grooved and pivoted adjustable sickle shaped 'blade, B, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the convex grooved helve A, adjustable blade B, and thumb-screw O, substantially as described and set forth.
