My invention relates to improvements in a pocket.

The object of my invention is to provide a safety pocket having a diverting means for articles placed therein to avoid their passing outward through the hand opening when the pocket is in a reclining or any variance from a vertically normal position subject to the I wearer or should the same be carelessly handled.

A further object of my invention is to provide a safety means within a pocket having a diverting element differentiating from a cord, tape or the like, such as disclosed in my patent allowed May 2:2, 1917, bearing Numher 1,226,640 and of which I am the owner by virtue of assignment duly recorded in the Patent Ofiice of the United States, and furthermore my improvement involves a modification of the flap as disclosed in said patent.

A still further object of my invention is to simplify the assembly of the component parts of my pocket from a manufacturing standpoint.

-' These and other objects will hereinafter be fully explained in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application inwhich:

Fig. 1 is a diagram of the pocket from a pattern standpoint.

Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the flaps folded toward each other on the body portion.

Fig. 3 is a side View showing the lower back corners of the body portion folded back for the purpose, of stitching together the lower end of the flaps.

Fig. a is a side view of the pocket horizontally positioned,partsremoved for convenience of illustration and further description.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 55 in Fig. 4, and being expanded for convenience of description.

My invention as disclosed consists of a 7 body portion 1 and flap portions 2, oppositely positioned and integral with the body portion, and being folded toward each other on dotted lines AA respectively and terminating into the form shown in Fig. 2; the second fold being on line B bringing the flap portions to engagement with each other and in registry, the contour of which is shown in Fig. 4; and when so positioned a convenient Way for the required stitching together of the lower portion of the flaps is to turn back the lower rear corners of the pocket proper to the position shown at C in 3 by which means it is possible'to stitch along the dotted lines D and E; D being the closing means for the lower end of the flaps and ranging upward to the lower extremity of the hand as opening as indicated byline F, while-the stitching along the dotted line E is the closing means for the inner edges extending from the line D to the lower extremity of the flaps, and by turning back the portions C of the pocket to the positions shown by dottedrlines C, the same being stitched with the outer edge of the web therebetween is closing means for the pocket and attaching means for the web 3; the intermediate portions between said stitching will hereinafter be termed as a web and is diverting means for articles contained in the pocket to either side of the flaps in their movement toward the hand opening as designated by circular elements 4 7 representing coins, there being one on each side of the flap portion; other articles will travel in like manner, it being understood that the accessible means to the hand opening is between the flap members as shown at G in Fig. 5, the said opening extending from the stitching D upward to the extremity of the flap and to the line of stitchingcH, at which point the pocket is attached to the waist band of thetrousers; in alignment therewith is the upper extremity of the hand opening that is indicated by an outwardly extending line I.

It is now clearly shown how articles may be placed in the pocket or withdrawn therefrom without obstruction on the part of the flap arrangement; the inner edges of which range diagonally and in straight alignment with the inner edge of the web portion and securely attached at the end extremities.

Such modifications maybe employed as lie within the scope of the appended claims.

W hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a pocket, a body portionand a web 199 portion for each side thereof and being turned inward, by which means a hand opening is formed, access into the pocket being between the flap portions, a web formed by stitching together the lower end portions of the flaps, one line of stitching ranging downward and inward from the lower extremity of the hand opening, another line of stitching along the inner edge of the web, the lower extremity and outer edge of the web being attached along the edge of the lower body portion, the web functioning as a diverting means for articles contained in the pocket as they come in contact therewith, to avoid the same contained therein from passing outward between the flaps.

2. In a pocket, a body portion, flaps and a web portion integrally arranged and turned inward, the flap portions separably arranged, the web portion being stitched together, the inner edge of the web and flaps being in alignment and diagonally ranging across the body portion and secured thereto at their outer end extremities, all as and for the purpose specified.
