UMBRELLA-SUPPORT.
Nu.184;,882, I Patented Nov.28, 1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIC'E.
ASA T. MARTIN, JR., OF WAVERLY, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, MILLARD F. POTTER, AND JAMES BROTHEBTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,882, dated November 28, 1876; application file September 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA T. MARTIN, Jr., of Waverly, in the county of Bremer and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Umbrella-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved umbrella-holder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line x 00, in Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the clip for holding the statf of the umbrella.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
My invention consists in a plate having sockets formed in it in such a manner that they are capable of holding the umbrella-staff eitherperpendicularly or at any desired angle. This plate is secured to the bottom of the carriage in such a position that its central socketis directly under a screw clamp or clip attached to a metallic supporting-frame or to the edge of the seat.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for holding an umbrella at any angle for protection from sun or rain.
Referring to the drawing, A,is a circular plate, having the central socket a, and a number of sockets 1), arranged in one or more circles in the face of the plate. This plate is firmly attached to the bottom of the carriage, and a yoke or frame, B, supported by a brace, c, is placed over it in such a position as to bring the clamp d, which is attached to it, directly over the central socket a.
The device is placed near the carriage-seat O, and when the seat is fixed, or is not a spring-seat, the clamp d may be attached to the edge of the seat and the fram'eB dispensed with. The clamp 61 consists of a curved clip, 6, which is supported at one end by a screw that .passes through it into the yoke or edge of the seat, and is retained at the other end by a thumb-screw, f. i
The umbrella-staff g, which is made slightly conical at its lower end, is passed through the clamp d and into the socket a, if the umbrella is to be supported vertically. If it is desired to hold it at any particular angle, it is placed in one of the sockets b, and retained by turning the thumb-screwf.
The advantages'claimed for my invention are, that the umbrella is retained in any desired position without effort; that it holds it firmly, and admits of the free use of both hands. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the plate A, having sockets or openings at and b, and the clamp d, with a carriage body or seat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ASA T. MARTIN, JR.
