Description
(N0 Mddel.) H. TOSSO.
UMBRELLA SUPPORT.
N0. 351,669. Patented Oct. 26, 1886.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-HIPPOLYTE TOSSO, on NEW oRLEANs, LOUISIANA.
UMBRELLA-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 351,669, dated October 26, 1886.
Application filed August 6, 1886. Serial No. 210,211. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIPPOLYTE Tosso, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented anew and Improved Umbrella Support, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of. my'improved umbrella-support. Fig. 2 is afrontelevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on linear min Fig. 1, looking downward. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the clamp.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of ihe drawlugs.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device for attachment to the side of a wagon, boat, velocipede, baby-carriage, orf'friiit-stand, for holding an umbrella in a suitable position for 'shielding the user from sun or rain.
My invention consists of a series of bars and clamps arranged to'permit of any desired angle or height.
The clamp A is provided with a screw, 13, for binding it on the side of a boat, carriage seat or body, or other support, and has two series of holes, a a, the axis of one series of holes being arranged at right angles to the axis of the other series, for receiving a tube, 0, which is clamped in position by a set-screw, b, the tube being adapted for insertion in either set of holes, which maybe shifted so as to clamp the tube in either direction. In the side of the tube, near the free end thereof, is inserted a set-screw, c, and in the'tube is r eceived a rod, d,.which may be clamped in any desired position in the tube by the set-screw c.
To the outer extremity of the rod (2 is secured a right-angled arm, 1), provided at its upper end with a disk, e, serrated on one side.
To the serrated disk 6 is clamped an offsetarIn, E, having a disk, 0', provided with serrations corresponding with those of the disk 6. A clamping-screw, f, passes through the disk e into the disk 6, and serves to clamp the two disks together. Arranged in this way, the
. arm E may be clamped in any desired position.
The free extremity of the arm E is concaved to secure the umbrella-handle F, which'is retained therein by a clamp, G, which hooks over the umbrella handle, and is provided with a screw, g, which presses against the back of the arm E, and thus binds the handle F firmly to the arm. By this construction a free movement of the umbrella in all directions is secured when the clamping-screws are loosened, and by tightening the set-screws the arms maybe clamped so as to hold the umbrella in any desired position.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In an umbrella-support, the combination of the clampA, provided with two series .of holes, (0, arranged at right angles with each other, the tube 0, provided with the bindingscrew 0, the rod d, inserted in the tube, the right-angled arm D, secured to the rod d and provided with the serrated disk e, the arm E, having the serrated disk 6 and set-screw f, and the clamp G, adapted to engage the umbrella-handle, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the hollow staif O of an umbrella-holder, of the clamp A, having two series of holes, a a and a a, for receiving the stafi', substantially asspecified.
HIPPOLYTE TOSSO.
