B. ANDREWS. Auxiliary Saw Handle.
No. 231,977. Patented Sept. 7, 1880.

N- PETERS, PHOTO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL ANDREWS, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUXILIARY SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,977, dated September 7, 1880.
Application filed March 1, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL ANDREWS, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Auxiliary Saw-Handles; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object I have in view is an improvement upon my removable saw handle described in Letters Patent numbered 58,569, granted to me October 0, 1866, and in Letters Patent numbered 101,095, granted to me June 14, 1870, by providing an auxiliary or supplementary handle thereto, which can be readily attached or detached, as desired, and both handles can be released from the saw, when necessary, at the same time.
My invention therein consists in the particular construction and mode of attachment of this auxiliary or supplementary attachable or detachable handle, as more fully hereinafter described and explained.
To assist in understanding this invention, reference may be made to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a view of the removable sawhandle with the auxiliary handle in position thereon, and Fig. 2 a similar view of a modification of the same.
Similar letters denote corresponding parts in each figure.
In the drawings, A represents the removable saw-handle particularly described in the Letters Patent above referred to, having the clamping-ferrule a, with its proper saw-plate groove and saw-plate loop I), and B represents a saw-plate in position in the loop b.
The auxiliary or supplementary handle is composed of a stout wire or small rod, 0, one end,c, of which has a screw-thread, and is screwed into one side of the clamping-ferrule a, while its opposite end, 0, is turned up sulficiently to hold it from withdrawal from its position in the saw-plate loop b. The two sides (1 d of this rod 0 are nearly parallel, and the wire between, these sides is bent at right angles, serving as a support for an ordinary wooden grasping-handle, c. This anxiliary handle is attached to the other handle by first screwing the threaded end into the clamping-ferrule and then inserting the other end through the saw-plate loop.
(No model.)
When the saw-plate is inserted and held in position by screwing up the saw'handle A, then the lower edge of the saw-plate will have a bearing on the side (I of the rod 0, and has thereby a better support.
When the handle A is unscrewed, so as to release the saw-plate, the auxiliary handle is released and may be removed.
The modification shown in Fig. 2 differs only in having the side d constructed of sheet metal, with a hook at one end adapted to embrace the neck of the ferrule proper of the saw-handle A at a point next to the clampingferrule; or this part (1 may be made of wire and be a part of the wire or rod 0. This handle 0 may be attached by passing the hooked end of the side (1 over the neck of the ferrule proper, and then spring the side (1- so that its end 0 may be inserted through the saw-plate loop I).
It is evident that this improvement is capable of use with a variety of saw-handles.
The advantages of an auxiliary or supplementary handle which may be readily attached and detached at the same time and by almost the same means as are used to apply or remove the handle proper from the saw-plate must be obvious to those familiar with the use of such.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The auxiliary or supplemental attachable and detachable saw-handle 0, constructed, arranged, and adapted to be attached by its upper arm to the permanent handle of a crosscut-saw, and having its lower arm pass through the loop of said saw-handle, whereby said saw may be used with the permanent handle alone or with both handles, substantially as described and shown.
2. In combination with a saw-handle having a clamping-ferrule and a sawplate loop, substantially as described, the auxiliary or supplementary saw-handle (J, secured in an attachable and detachable manner to said clamping'ferrule and loop, whereby said saw may be used with the permanent handle alone or with both handles, substantially as described and shown.
This specification signed and witnessed this 20th day of February, 1880.
Witnesses: EMANUEL ANDREWS.
