IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-SUPPORTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [81,235, dated August 15, 1876; application filed July 1, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED H. WRIGHT, of Monroe, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigamhave invented a new and valuable Improvement in UmbrellaHolders; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the'annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is aplan view of the clamping-ring for holding the post.

This invention has for its object to furnish a simple, cheap, and effective device for bold ing umbrellas, capable of being readily attached to the seats of vehicles and field 111achinery, such ashorsc-rakes, cnltivators, and mowing-machines, and which, at the same time, is so constructed that it may be conveniently adjusted to hold the umbrella iiiclined at any desired angle; and consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, A rep esents a spring clamping-ring, pivoted to a screw-rod, a, by which the same is secured to the seat of the vehicle. This clamping-ring A firmly holds a short post, B, the end thereof being inserted within the ring, after which the clamping-screw b is screwed up, to bring the ring tightly around the end of the post, a packing, 0, of rubber or other suitable material, being secured upon the interior of the ring, to prevent the post from slipping, and making a firmer connection between the two. To the upper end of the post B is secured a socket-arm, 0, formed with a segmental plate, D, having recesses or notches d. Pivoted by a suitable screw-bolt and nut to the plate D is a semicircular clamping-plate, E, and has hinged thereto a similar plate, E, which has an opened slotted flange, e, for the reception of a pivoted and swinging screw-rod,f, upon the plate E, so that when the 'two plates E E are brought around the handle of the umbrella they are firmly clamped thereto by bringing the rod f within the slot in the flange e, and screwing a clamping-nut, g, up until the plates E E are brought together sufficiently to firmly hold the umbrella in position.

The plates are lined upon the interior with rubber or other suitable flexible material, h, for the purpose as described in relation to the clamping-ring A.

When the umbrella is thus held between the plates E E it may be brought'to any angle from the perpendicular, and held in that position by simply disengaging with the notches or recesses d in the plate D, a springbolt, F, working within flanges *5, formed upon the exterior of the semicircular plate E, after which the plates E E may be brought around at any position desired, and, by releasing the spring-bolt, will engage with one of the series of notches d, and thereby retain the plates within the umbrella at the inclination desired.

The post B is made sufficiently long so as to extend down to the bottom of the vehicle, and at the same time have the holder, consisting of the plates and its operating mechanism, at a convenient height to be easily operated without rising from the seat.

The post B may have upon its lower end a spur or metal plug, j, which fits within a hole or recess in the vehicle-bottom, to hold said post steady. I

It will be seen, by moving the postB in the clamping-ring A, the same is brought and held at the desired angle with the directionof motion of the vehicle, thereby bringing the umbrella at the same angle, the ring A being hinged or pivoted to the screw-rod a to allow of this adjustment.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the spring clampingring A, pivoted or hinged to the screw-rod a and clamping-nut b, with the post B, carrying segmental plate I), semicircular clampingplates E E, screw-rod and nut fg, and springbolt F, constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
