Description

Dec. 8, 1931. Y
noon AND WINDOW SILENCER Filed March 22, 1930 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 8, 1931 Paris HUGH r. HAY, or SAVANNAH, GEORGIA DOOR AND WINDOW SILENCER,
Application filed March 22,
My present invention has reference to a combined buffer and anti-rattling device for doors or windows, and my object is the provision of a a device for this purpose which is simple in construction, but strong and durable to withstand the rough usage to which it is subjected, which may be readily arranged in operative position to be contact ed by a door or window and which will serve as a buffer and a silencer in an eficient manner.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement in applied posit-ion upon a door abutment.
Figure 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 83 of Figure 1.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement.
In the drawings I have illustrated my improvement in connection with a door and a frame tl erefor, but obviously the device may be arranged for contact with a window to serve as both a buffer and a silencer for such window. On account of the different constructions found in door abutments, I do not wish to confine myself to use only the exact form of casing for buffer shown in my drawings, but wish to be free to alter same to best meet the conditions. The abutment strip on a door j amb is indicated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings by the numeral 1. I let in this strip or flange, preferably at two spaced parts thereof, the casing of the improvement. The casing is constructed from a single piece of thin metal formed to include a side 2, back 3 and top and bottom strips 4: and 5, respectively.
The top and bottom members 4 and 5 are of a length equalling the side 2, the said top and bottom having their outer ends flanged in opposite directions, as indicated by the numeral 6, respectively, and these flanges are let in recesses that communicate with the depression or pocket 7 in the strip 1 and in 1930. Serial No. 438,151.
which the casing is positioned. Suitable removable securingelements, such as screws 8, pass through openings in the flanged members 6 that provide the face elements of the casing.
The side 2 is preferably joined to the top and bottom members 4 and 5, and these with the back Sand the tongue 9 form a socket for the buffer 10. At the center of the back 3 there is provided an extension which is bent rightangularly to form a tongue 9. The strip 10 is of rubber or like elastic material and the outer end thereof is rounded and projects through the casing, the inner end of the top and bottom walls at the widened portion 11 of the buffer block or strip 10 being in direct contact with the top, bottom and rear walls of the casing. I
The side wall 2 and the tongue 9 are provided with alining openings 12 through which passes a pin 13 that also passes through the buffer block 10. The rounded outer end 14 of the buifer block is in the path of contact with a swinging door 15 that is hinged in the'frame and the contact of the said door a with the block will compress the latter to absorb shocks and to likewise silence the closing 7 of the door. The top and bottom, from the outer corners of the buffer block, are cutaway and thus brought out of contact with the top and bottom walls of the casing. This permits of the buffer block being expanded from the said cut-away portions thereof.
The buffer block can also expand laterally incident to the fact that one side thereof is not in contact with one of the sides of the casing. The casing may be readily removed from the pocket 7 when desired.
It is thought that the construction and advantages of the improvement will be apparcut to those skilled in the art so that further detailed description will not be required.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A door or window buffer and silencer ineluding a casing designed to be arranged in 5 the stop strip for such door or window, said casing being formed from a single piece of metal to include a side, back, top and a bottom, said top and bottom having their ends flanged in opposite directions in a line with the outer edge of the side, the back having integrally formed therewith a tongue and a bufier block received in the casing and frictionally engaged by the side and tongue said buffer block having'its outer face rounded and its corners cut-away so that the rounded face ofthe block will be projected through the casing and the upper and lower corners thereof held out of contact with the casing In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
