Description

Nov.v17, 1931. J. R. HUGHES DOORCHECK Filed Ma'rch 15, 1929 24 INVENTOR.
BY /WZM A TTO Patented Nov. 17, 1931 PATENT OFFICE vJAMES R. HUGHES, 0F SOUTH BEND, lNDIANA DOQRCHECK Application led March 15, 1929. Serial No. 347,252.
This invention relates to a door check construction particularly adapted for use on vehicle bodies for limiting the outward swing of the door therefor.
Heretofore when flexible straps have been wear and breakage of the same because ofl the undue stresses and strains applied thereto as it was bent around the body pillar which made this type of check unsatisfactory for commercial use. Furthermore, "these door checks would gradually wear until a constant opening of the door caused them to become loosened and have a bulging loop extending into the body when the door was closed,
1t is the object of this invention to provide a door check having a flexible strap adapted to have one end slidably received Within the door and having the other end thereof pivotally mounted on the body pillar to permit a straight pull on the strap when the door is swung to open position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a U-shaped plate secured to the door frame member having a pivot pin secured to the side faces thereof to pivotally mount the flexible door strap thereon to permit pivotal movement of the strap so that a straightV pull is applied thereto when the door is swung to open position.
A further object is to provide a recess in the body frame member adapted to receive the end of the check strap which is pivotally mounted between the side faces of a U- shaped plate, the opposite end of the check strap being slidably received in the door frame member so that as the door is swung to open position the strap will permit of a straight pull being applied thereto.
The above being among the objects of the present invention the same consists of certain details of construction and combination ushown in Figure 2.
of partsto be hereinafter described and then claimed having the above and other objects in view.
In the drawings which show a suitable embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a section of the frame body member and a. portion of the door swung to partial open position having my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through the body frame member and the door frame member, the door being shown in closed position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, 65 showing the door in the extreme open position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line i-f of Figure 2, showing the U-shaped plate in section and the pivotal mounting for the check strap.
Figure 5 is a view similar. to Figure 2 showing a modied mounting of the U-shaped plate. In the drawings, in which like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, there is shown a portion of a door l() adapted to be hinged at 11 on the body 12 of the vehicle, the door 10 being formed of an upright frame face member 13 80 and inner and outer panel members ltrand 14. The body is provided with an upright frame pillar member comprising a channel 15 and a generally U-shaped member 16 having its free edges welded or otherwise secured to the sides of the channel' 15. `The frame member 13 of the door 10 is adapted to abut and lie against the body frame member when the'door is in closed position as is clearly 90 The door check comprises an elongated flexible strap 17 having a .loop 18 formed in one end thereof to receive the pin 19 mounted between the side portions of the U-shaped plate 20. rlhe opposite end of the strap 17 95 is provided with a cross head 21, the strap being adapted to extend into the door 10l through the slot 22 and be constrained against disengagement with the door 10 when the same is moved' to extreme open position be- CJI cause of the iact that the cross head 21 is ot greater length than the slot 22.
rl'he body frame member preferably has a recess 23 in the face thereof provided with slots 2d; therein through which the parallel side portions of the U-shaped plate are adapted to extend, the U-shaped pla-te 20 preferably being welded at 25 to the inner n'all of the frame pillar member 16 and havinga liange 2G welded at 27 to the channel. 15 as shown in Figure t.
ln 'gure 5 l have shown a U-shaped plate .2S secured to the outer wall of the body frame member 1G by means of the screws 29 which extend through the U-shaped plate 28, the member and are threaded into the plate SO. ln this modified construction the pull on the strap 17 is against the screws 29 while in the construction shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the 5l-shaped plate 2O is the more lirmly se ted against the member 16 when a position by riveting or otherwise. Be- .s-L of the sliding enga-gement of the strap n' 'h the door l0 and because of the fact at he anchored end oi2 the strap 17 is pivotally n'iounted en the door frame member, the pail on the strap is always in a straig it line, there being no tendency for the strap to buckle or become distorted as the door is swung to the extreme opened position. The pivoting of the strap as heretofore dened eliminates much of the wear and tear on the same and insures the free opening of the door because the strap does not oii'er any resistance against the opening of the door.
lt is to be understood that formal changes may be made in the specie embodiment of the invention described without departing from the spirit and substance of the broad intention, the scope of which is commensurate with the appended claims.
llfhat claim is 1. The combination with a body frame member having slots formed therein, and a door frame member having a slot formed therein, of a door check comprising a U- shaped plate secured to the inner wall of said body frame member with the sides of said plate extending outwardly through said slots, a resilient strap having one end slidably received in the slot in said door frame member and having a loop formed in its opposite end, and means -for pivotally mounting the looped end of said strap on the side faces of said U-shaped plate to permit a straight pull on said strap when said door is swung to open position.
2. The combination with a body frame member having a recess formed in the edge face thereof, and a door frame member hinged thereto, of a door check` comprising a member having one part thereof secured to the inner face of said body frame member and projecting through the edge face of said body frame member into said recess, a resilient strap having one end slidably received in said door frame member, and means to pivotally Connect the opposite end of said strap on the projecting part of said door check member to permit a straight pull on said strap When said door is swung to open position.
3. The combination with a body trame member having a recess formed in the edge face thereof, and a door 'frame member hinged thereto,of a door check comprising a U-shaped plate having its base secured to the edge face of said body frame member in said recess and its side portions extending outwardly, a resilient strap having one end slidably received in said door frame member, and means cured in the side portions of said U-shaped plate having its longitudinal axis substantially in line with the edge face of said door frame member pivotally connecting the opposite end o said strap to permit a straight pull on said stra-p when said door is swung to open position.
Signed by me at South Bend, indiana, this 13th day of March. 1929.
JAMES R. HUGHES.
