(0. 16158) This invention relates to an improvement in combination hinges and hangers for closures for wall openings such as screens and storm sash of the type, for example, disclosed in the Alexander Patent No. 2,852,804, dated September 23, 1958, and the Ward Patent No. 2,866,225, dated December 30, 1958.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and practical form of combination hinge and hanger which requires no further work to be done on the closure element, whether it is a screen or storm sash after assembly, to apply the hanger. In that connection, the invention provides a device which straddles and slidablyembraces one of the rails of the closure to be manually shiftable therealong to engage and disengage keeper means on the frame of the wall opening thereby to perform the dual function of supporting and pivoting the closure in its opening through one of the closure rails. In the patents above referred to the combination hanger and hinge is secured to either a wood or metal closure frame and one rail of the frame is frictionally fitted into the hanger in a manner, which when the closure is removed, leaves the hanger itself to remain as a part of the frame of the wall opening.
In contradistinction to the construction of the patent, the present hinge-and hanger includes a device used in pairs and each one of which is more or less permanently carried by one of the rails of the screen or sash frame and is longitudinally slidable therealong to engage a related keeper on the opposite sides of the Wall opening. Thus, when a closure with the present improvement is to be removed from its opening, this is accomplished by sliding hangers inwardly toward each other to disengage the related keepers, and withdrawing said closure at right angles to the direction of movement of the hangers on the closure frame. In this case the hangers themselves stay with the closure in the form of screen frame or sash rather than with the frame of the closure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger and hinge construction wherein a hanger body is slidable on a closure rail which may have a keeper eye to engage with a pivot pin on the frame of the wall opening or, alternatively, the'hanger may have a pivot pin 'to engage with a pivot eye or hole in an escutcheon on the frame of the wall opening. In either embodiment the purpose and function of the hanger and hinge is the same in the respect that the pivot may be on the hanger or on the opposite sides of the wall opening.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical form of hanger which readily lends itself to standard manufacturing procedures and whose resilient body is in the nature of a spring clip including opposite yieldable walls to be snapped over the closure rail to become slidably interlocked therewith, by the mere act of pressing the hanger onto the rail, whereupon, the hanger assembly is ready for use with the pivot means on the window frame.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

The frame of the Wall opening is designated generally as F, and, for the purpose of illustration, preferably includes the lateral surfaces 1 to which, according to one form of the invention, are applied pivot means in the form of pins '2 as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2.
In FIGURES 2 and 9, these pins may be molded from nylon or the like and include a base or section 3 provided with an opening 4 for receiving a fastening screw 5 or its equivalent for attaching the pivot pins to the window frame. In that connection, it will of course be understood that the base portions of the pivot pins 2 may be secured to a metal window frame by the use of any of the so-called glues or adhesives of the epoxy resin .type making it unnecessary to use a separate fastening.
The closure frame F defined by the stiles, lintel and sill is intended to receive the window screen or storm sashdesignated generally as S and including a series of connected rails 6 which are usually made of aluminum or aluminum alloy.
One of these rails is intended sild-ably to receive the combined hanger and hinge, designated generally as H, and including a yieldable body preferably of generally U-shaped formation including a back wall 7 and the spaced resilient side walls or Wings 8 intended to embrace the selected rail 6 of the screen frame.
The lower edge portions of each side wall may have the inturned lip portions 9 (FIGS. 4 and 5) to fit over the opposite edges 9a on the screen frame as shown in FIGURE 7. In fact, these lips may engage the inner face of the rail itself so that when the hanger is pressed manually onto the rail at right angles thereto, the Wing 8-8 will give and permit the hanger body to -snap over the rail to embrace the same and prevent accidental angular displacement. While the lips 9-9 are shown in the drawing as being discontinuous with respect to the related edge of a wing 8, nevertheless, the intent of the invention would be prserved if the lips 9 were coextensive with the edges of the wings. Moreover, one lip is made shorter than the other to permit the hanger to be projected to proper position taking into account the thickness of the rail at right angles to the rail on which it is mounted (FIG. 2).
The back wall 7 of the combined hanger and hinge is formed with a tongue 7a bent inwardly to bias the hanger 3 in a direction to hold the lips frictionally engaged with the rail to prevent looseness. Also, one of the wings 8 has one end ofiset as indicated at 10 to provide a finger grip or tab for facilitatingthe sliding movement of the hanger on the rail, while the opposite end of the same wing is also struck-up from the plane of the wall to provide an arm or tab 11 having the eye 12 which receives a related hinge pin 2.
, In practice it will be understood that two of the combined hanger and hinge elements H are placed one selccted rail 6 with the oifset portions 11, each having an eye 12, disposed toward the stile edge of the closure frame While the finger grip 10 is exposed at the other end i for manual manipulation.
Assuming that the pivot pins have been placed on the inner face of the wall or window opening 1, and in alignment, it will be understood that the closure S may be inserted in'the window opening and each of the hanger members slidelaterally outward to cause the eyes 12 to' move over the pins 2 to pivotally support and also suspend the screen in the Window opening so that when it is grasped at its bottom edge, it may be swung into the room space to have access to the outside, after the latch L has been released. 7
On the other hand, when it is desired to remove a screen or sash for storage, it only becomes necessary to manually slide each combined hanger and hinge element H inwardly of the sides of the screen, that is toward each other, to completely disconnect each element from the pivot pins. Thus, it will be understood that since each element H is interlocked with the closure frame it will shown, the plate may have a fastening receiving opening over one inner edge of the said screen frame, a continuous :arcuate out-turned finger tab extending from another free edge of said plate, a second tab extending from another free edge portion of said first plate, the other of said wings comprising an elongated second plate formed with an in-turned lip engageable over the opposite inner edge of said screen frame, hinge sections secured to the closure frame at the opposite corners of one sidethereof i in which. said screen and storm sash frames are mounted, pivotal connecting means on each of said second tabs and said hinge sections, each respective conneoting means of a hinge section being engageable with the connecting means of the respectively adjacent second tab of its respective adjacent snap-on hanger body.
' 2. The combination hanger and pintle hinge assembly as described in claim 1, wherein, said pivotal connecting means comprises, a hinge pintle aperture on said second tabs of said first plates, and pintle pins on said hinge sections secured to said closure frame.
3. The combination hanger and pintle hinge assembly as described in claim 1, wherein, said pivotal connecting means comprises, a pintle pin on said second tabs of said first plates, and hinge pintle apertures on said hinge sections secured to said closure frame, 4. The combination hanger and pintle hinge assembly, as described in claim 1, wherein the said hangers are respectively slidable to and from hinge connecting positions to permit quick removal of the said frame.
5. A combination hanger and pintle hinge assembly for pivotally' mounting screens, storm sash frames and the like within a closure frame, said assembly comprising a pair of snap-on hanger bodies, each body comprising,

From the foregoing it will now be seen that the present invention provides a simple, practical and reliable combined hinge and hanger adapted to pivotally and removably mount a screen or sash in the opening of a window frame without the necessity of leaving the combined hinge and hanger on the side of the window opening a would be the .case, for example, in the patents referred to,
