Description
(Model) I. L. LANDIS.
GATE HINGE.
Patented June 6, 188% UNITED STATES PATENT O FIC V ISRAEL L. LANDISf OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
GATE- HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,176, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed March 20, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIs, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. w v
- This invention relates to certain improvements in gate-hinges; audit has for its object to provide a hinge that may be readily applied to an ordinary gate that is already in use, when required, and adjusted and fastened thereon so that it will hang and swing properly, and changed, if required, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain bythe means. and devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 7 Figure 1- represents a perspective view of my improvement, and Figs. 2 and 3 similar views of modifications thereof.
The letter A indicates one of the Wings of my hinge, which is constructed of a strip of metal bent so as to form an eye, B, to set upon the pintle of an ordinary or other hinge secured to the gate-post. The said wing is pro.- vided with lips O, which are formed by bendin g the metal or otherwise, so as to grasp the edges of a batten, 1), which may be beveled at the edges, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, rabbeted, as indicated in Fig. 2, left plain, as indicated in Fig. 3, or otherwise formed, as may prove convenient. V
The letter E indicates a wedge, which is inserted between the batten and wing, and which serves to clamp the wing securely to the batten. The said wedge may be driven between the face of the batten and the wing or between the edge of the batten and wing of the hinge, Figs. 1 and 2 showing it between the face vand wing, and Fig. 2 between the edge and wing. i
The hinge is designed to be secured at any convenient point on the batten of agate by nails or otherwise in such position that the wing will be in about the proper place reset over the pintle. not be accurately attached, the wedge allows the wing to he slipped along its edges and secured, so as to adjust the gate perfectly.
It will be perceived that as constructed my improved device will permit a gate to be hung very readily without rendering necessary skilled labor, rendering it an easy matter to repair an old gate or set a new one. This wing may be wholly or partially cast, instead of being made of .bent metal, as before mentioned.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
is- A hinge leaf .or wing consisting of a flat plate, or strip of metal, having an eye adapted to set over the pintle of the opposite leaf, and
two grasping-pieces, c 0, extending at about righeangles to the leaf proper and turned inwardly to grasp the batten, substantially as specified.-
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in
presence of two witnesses, this 17th day of March, 1882. v
' ISRAEL L. LANDIS.
