he primary object of the present inven- .tion relates to the provision of means pro` Yviding a proper closure for a box of this character, the means including more specifically l the provision of one or a plurality of handles.
A further object -relates to the provision of a suitable type of` handle which permits of maximum ease'of carrying the box.
L Further objects relating to details of conn struction will be apparent from the following description, read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
' 1 is a plan view of a blank from which F1 :o one germ ofthe improved type of box may be made. I
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation' showlg the closure of the box formed from the bla of Fig. 1. p
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of the subject matter of Fig. 2.
Fig.- 5 is a diagrammatic plan view showin the ends of a modified type of blank.
Fig. 6 is a fra entary elevation showing the closure resulting from the use of the blank lof Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 7 of Fig. 6. Fi 8 is a sectional perspective view showin t e closure of Figs. 5, 6 and 7.
ig. 9 is a plan view of still another form of blank'embodying the invention.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a Aartially closed box formed from the blank o Fig. 9. The blank shown in Fig. 1 is provided with fold lines preferably delineated by means of scoring dividing the box'into relatively foldable sections'. These sections include the main wall 2 of a cover portion, the main wall 4 of a bottom portion, a connecting wall 6 between the two mentioned portions,
- sidewalls 8 and an end wall 10 of the cover portion, together with thefoldable connecting sections 12 and 14, side walls 16 of the bottom portion and end 18 of the bottom 1929. serial No. 359,809.'
portion. As will be obvious, the sections are y relatively folded so that a closed box may be produced with walls 16 and 18 underlying respectively walls 8 and 10, atwhich tim'.
walls 2 and 4 will be brought into substantial parallelism. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not to be limited to the specific type of blank disclosed, inasmuch as, by changes of dimensions, the closed box may be made to assume a trapezoidal or other form and since the blank may be formed in a radically out below.
A plurality of slits 20 extend inwardly from the free Vedge of the end 10. These slits are curved inwardly, in the modification shown in Fig. 1,' to form convex portions 22 extending inwardly from the portions of the end 10 adjacent the slot which is formed l by bending the defined handle 24 about the fold line 26, which is preferably defined by scoring. The handle 24 is provided with a dierent manner, as will be pointed lap28 which is of tapered form, as shown,
tapering outwardly from a fold line 30 for a purpose which will be apparent hereafter.
Slits 32 extend inwardly from the free edge of end 18 and are bowed outwardly adjacent a scored fold line 36 to define convex outwardly extending portions 34 on a handle 38. This handle is provided with a flap 40 similar to that above described and of substantially the same dimensions, tapering outwardly from a fold line 42.
When the blank is folded to form a closed box, the end 18 underlies end l10. Handle 38 enters within the slot formed in end'lO and contacts with handle 24, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The flaps 28 and 40 may be bent out of the plane of the handle and when so bent provide a broad area for contact with the fingers of 4a carrier of thebox. The tapered formation prevents the separation of the handles and tends to secure the box in closed position.
The box is primarily held secured in closed position by reason of the fact that inwardly extending convex portions 22 yieldingly prevent the outward movement of handle 38. In order to enter handle 38 within the slot, or to remove it therefrom, distortion of these convex portions or of the handle is necessary. Further, the convex portions 34 of the hand e prevent downward movement of end 18 relatively to end 10, since the edges of the slot in end 10 are engaged bythe innermost portions of the convex edges 34.
A modified arrangement having substantially the same characteristics in providing a proper closure for a box is shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8. The blank in general may e of any formation, but includes the overlying end 44 and underlying end 46 res ectively similar to ends 10 and 18 of the modification previously discussed. Slits 48 extend inwardly from the free edge of end 44 to the ends of a scored line 50 at the ends of which are formed slots 52 of a width comparable with the thickness of the pasteboard or other flexible sheet material used to form the box.
The handle 51 defined by the slits and scored line 50 is provided with a iiap 60 similar to the flap 28 heretofore discussed.
Slits 54 extend inwardly from the free edge of end 46, as shown, diverging at their inner ends to the ends of a fold line 56 defined by scoring. Slots 58 are provided in the opposite ends of the handle57 adjacent the scored line 56 and are of a width comparable with the thickness of the pasteboard. A iap 62, similar to flap 40 and of the same dimensions as flap 60, is formed in handle 57.
When this modified form of box is closed, the parts assume the ositions showncmost clearly in Fi 8, Wit end 46 underlying end 44. The andle 57 extends within slots 52, while slots 58 of the handle 57 embrace the edges of the `opening in end 44. In order to open the box, a distortion of the material adjacent either of the slots would be necessary so that the slots effectively maintain the box closed in a 'eldng manner. The two flaps on the handlbs are bent outwardly outside of the planes of the handles, forming a finger hold such as discussed above.
In the modification shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the blank of the form shown is provided with tapering scored lines 64 and 66 intersected by transverse scored lines providing the bottom 68, the top 70 and side walls and connecting portions. It will be noted that the top 7 0 lies between the divergent portions of scored lines 64 and 66 so that the lid will readily embrace the bottom without distortion when the box is closed. The end walls are formed with handles 72 and 74 similar to handles 38 and 24 of Fig. 1. The box will therefore be held closed in a similar manner as will be obvious.
