Description
C. NICKLAS.
SPINNING TOPS..
No.182,694. Pa-tented Sept. 26, 1876.
HER, w
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES NICKLAS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,694, dated September 26, 1876 application filed 1 May 13, 1876. V
on the stem of which is an index for indicating chance numbers at the terminus'of its spinning, the said index being provided with Wings for retarding or retaining it in a fixed position, and the rim of the top being provided with a scale of figures or characters'in such a manner as to form a neat and useful toy.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my top, which is provided with a handle, B, secured thereto by or through the stem C, which is screwed axially into the top, as shown. Upon the stem C is mounted the index D, consisting of two arms, a, a, which are located either opposite or at an angle to each other upon the face of the top. Upon ornear the rim of said face I mark a scale, E, of figures or characters, which may be so arranged relatively to the index that when one arm thereof is upon one figure the other or opposite arm is midway, or nearly so, between two other figures. Thus, by placing the figures near to each other one or the other of the arms a a, is always located in proximity to, if not upon, a figure, and there is no liability of a non-count of the index. The arms a, a of the index are each provided with a wingor blade,
b, which is formed by bending up the edge or edges of the arms, or in any other suitable manner. When the top is spun or spinning, the resistance of these wings b b retards or prevents the turning with it of the index D; or, in other words, the said index is retained in a fixed position, or nearly so, while the top is spinning, whereby its position is varied upon the rim or scale E, and it will indicate a different number at the terminus of every different spin. v
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spinning-top, carrying upon its stem an index, D, which is provided with wings I) for retarding its motion when the top is spinning, in combination with a scale, E, of figures or characters marked upon the rim of the top, substantially asand for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of March, 1876.
CHARLES NICKLAS.
