vrrnn STATES PATENT QFFIG-E.
JOHN G. WINTON, OF MUDDY OREEK,.TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANGING SPITTOQNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,257, dated September 12, 1876; application filed April 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. WIN'roN, of Muddy Creek, in the county of London and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Hanging Spittoon and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a spittoon so constructed as to adapt it to be suspended upon a wall or other vertical support.
The device consists of a saliva box or receptacle, of suitable form, provided with, or
. attached to, a plate extended upward, and
having a flange around its edge to preventthe saliva ejected against the plate from escaping over its edge, and to guide it into the aforesaid receptacle, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a vertical section.
' The spittoon consists essentially of the salivareceptacle A- and the back plate B, provided with a flange, a.
The former, A, may be of various forms; but that which I prefer is wedge-shaped, with the beveled edge downward, so that the top or mouth of the same may be opened or extended as widely as possible inorder to catch the saliva.
The back plate B extends upward toa distauce several times the height of the box A,
and is preferably oval-shaped, or circular, at
the top. A narrow flange, a, is attached around the edge, and stands at a right angle to the face of the plate.
The function of the flange is to prevent the saliva which may strike against the plate B from escaping over the edge thereof, guide it into the receptacle A.
The device may be suspended by means of a ring, b, attached to its top, or by a'hook-like arm, 0, attached to its back. It may thereby be suspended against the wall of the apartment in which it is to be used, or from a tableleg, or any other independent support.
It is thus not liable to be broken or overturned and its contents spilled, as in the case of spittoons of the ordinary form, which are adapted to be placed and used only upon the It may also be more conveniently Washed and cleansed, and more cheaply manufactured, than the common spittoon.
The material employed in its construction may be sheet metal, earthenware, or any other which is naturally impervious to liquids, or has been rendered so by artificial means.
What I claim is- The improved spittoon composed of the receptacle A and vertical back B, provided with flange a, as shown and described.
and to JOHN G. WINTON.
