P. G.NIELSEN. DRINKING FOUNTAIN. APPLIOATION FILED APR. 17, 1912.

PETER o. NIELSEN, or PORTLAND,
OREGON, ASSIGNOB TO B. DUNIS, OEPORTLAND,
OREGON.
.. Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed Apia-1 17, 1912. Serial No. 691,480.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PETER C. NIELSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking- Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve ments in drinking fountains, and has for its object to provide a fountain for poultry, which will keep the water free from filth, and which will supply the water, with a small area exposed, until the fountain is emptied.
A further object is to provide a fountain of the class indicated, which can be conveniently carried from place to place, and which is adapted to be suspended upon the wall of the building, or otherwise, above the ground.
These and other objects are accomplished by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete fountain. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, showing the opening exposing the water.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 indicates the body or tank of the fountain, which has a general cylindrical form, with the rear side flattened at 4, so as to afford a broad surface or base to bear against the wall or support on which the fountain may be suspended.
2 is an inwardly curved wall section, secured in the opening 10 in the front side of the wall 1. To the upper edge of said section is fixed a covering 8 formed by inturning the portion of the front wall displaced in making the opening 10. This closes the space between it and the main wall, so the fountain will be air ti 'ht, except for the opening left at the lower end of the wall section. This section 2 extends below the lower edge of the opening 10, leaving the space 2 exposing the water, from which the fowls may drink.
The lower end of the tank is closed by the bottom member 9 and in like manner the member 1 closes the top.
Secured upon the top from front to rear, is the bail, or hand hold 3, of suitable length to be conveniently grasped by the hand, where the wire or bar, of which it is composed, is bent to form the verticpl portion 3 It is again bent and extended at 3" parallel with the portion 3. This portion 3 is secured beneath the keeper 7 on the top of the tank. The succeeding portion 5 is then bent to stand parallel with the portion 8, and it terminates in the eye or loop 5, in which the portion 3 is engaged. The terminal of the portion 3 is bent upwardly at the rear of the loop 5, in line with the rear side of the tank; and it is formed into a ring 6, by means of which the fountain may be suspended at any convenient point.
The tank may be filled by placing it upon the flat side 4:, beneath a spigot or pump spout. The water falling upon the recessed portion 2, enters the opening 2" filling the body of the tank and driving the air out. hen the fountain is set upright the water settling toward the bottom leaves a vacuum in the upper portion, and the pressure of the atmosphere upon the water in the opening 2 prevents the escape of the water therethrough, until it has been consumed by the fowls, so that it will stand below the edge of the section 2, thereby permitting the entrance of the air. In this manner there is provided a neat, inexpensive and convenient fountain, which will keep the water clean until consumed, and which may be secured at any point desired in such manner that it can not be overturned, or otherwise disturbed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Leters Patent, is
1. A drinking fountain of the class described, comprising a cylindrical tank having a flat rear side, and a hand hold comprising across the upper end of the tank, the body of which is recurved parallel to the base and extended to the rear edge of the tank a base portion pivotally secured,
Where it is bent upwardly in line with its rear Wall and terminates in a retaining loop the free end of said base portion being bent upwardly and engaged upon said recurved 5 portion to form a stay therefor.
2. A drinking fountain of the class described, comprising a tank having'a flat rear side, a hand hold of quadrilateral form. pivotally secured by one side upon the top of 10 the tank in such position that the rear end portion thereof Will stand in line With the rear side of the tank, and a retaining loop formed in said rear portion, in the plane of the rear side of the tank.
In testimony whereof I- aflix my signature 15 in presence of tWo Witnesses.
' PETER C. NIELSEN.
