Description

G, GUNTHER. Feed and Water Cup for Bird-Cage.
No. 204,562. Patented June 4,1878.
Wm M W 0 M ma M ft PETERS, PHD
o m G m a u w u m a W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOTTLOB GUNTHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED AND WATER CUPS FOR BIRD-CAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,562, dated June 4, 1878; application filed May 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Go'rrLoB GtiNrHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed and Water Cups for Bird-Oages,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a side view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a fountain-cup for a bird-cage, said cup being closed at the top and provided with a fiat inclined bottom, and with a discharge-opening near its bottom leading to a spout, which is provided with an extension running up to the top of the cup, or nearly so, and adapted to fit between the filling-wires of the cage, to which the cup is to be attached.
Fountain-cups for bird-cages have been in use for a long time, and they have been manufactured in different forms, all closed at the top, and provided with spouts of various forms. In the oldest fountain-cups such spouts extend out at right angles from the inner surfaces of the bodies, and such cups are adapted to be used for water, but not for seed. This defect has been sought to be remedied by giving to the bottom line of the body and of the spout a partly-inclined position, so that the seed will more readily find its way into the spout and come within reach of the bird. But even in such fountain-cups the seed is liable to become clogged up in the rear portion of the spout so that it cannot be reached by the bird. Furthermore, the bottoms of these last named feed-cups are rounded, so that such cups cannot stand, which is the source of much inconvenience. These disadvantages I have sought to remedy by my invention.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my fountain-cup, which is closed at the top, and provided with a flat inclined bottom, B, and with a discharge-opening, a, near its bottom. This discharge-openmg leads into the spout O, the bottom surface of which is also flat and forms a continuation of the fiat inclined bottom B of the body A, so that when the cup is detached from the cage it can be set down upon a table. By these means the operation of handling my feed-cups in cleaning and filling the same is materially facilitated.
In order to enable the seed to reach the mouth of the spout U without clogging, I have provided the spout with an extension, I), which extends from its mouth up to the top of the body A, or nearly so, and which is open on its inside, so as to communicate freely with the. interior of the body A. By this arrangement, the seed, as it discharges from the body A, is sure to come close to the-mouth of the spout B, where itcan be conveniently reached by the bird.
The extension I) is made of such a width that it fits between the filling-wires of the cage to which the cup is to be attached, and assists in retaining the cup in the proper position. When the cup has been placed against the side of the cage, it is retained by a wire latch, c, or by any other suitable fastening.
My feed-cup can be made of glass, porcelain, metal, or any other suitable material, and it can be used for water and for seed with equal advantage.
I do not claim as my invention a fountaincup for a bird-cage, the body of said cup being closed at the top, and provided at its bottom with a discharge-opening which leads into a spout, the bottom line of the cup and of the inner portion of the spout forming an incline, such being already in existence.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fountain-cup for a bird-cage, the body of said cup being closed at the top, and provided with a flat inclined bottom and with a discharge-opening, a, near its bottom leading to a spout which is provided with an extension, 12, running up to the top of the cup, or nearly so, and adapted to fit between the filling-wires of the cage, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of May, 1878.
G. GUNTHER. [L.s.]
