SAMUEL P. LOW, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.
DUST-COLLECTING ATTACHMENT FOR BBOOMS.
Application filed January 21, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, SAMUEL P. Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dust-Collecting Attachment for Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device, flexibly and adjustably attachable to a broom handle, and carrying with it a collector into which the dust gathered by the broom may be swept.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view partly in section, showing its application in practice.
The object of this invention is to provide a dust collecting attachment or receptacle, with so flexible a connection between it and the handle of the broom as will allow the broom to be moved around a considerable space in front of the collector without moving the latter, and at the same time to provide a cover connection between the broom and the collector which will prevent, to a large extent, the escape of dust raised by the broom. The connecting device also serves as a lifter by which, when the broom is raised to carry it to any point, the dust collector will be tilted and held in such position as to retain its contents without spilling; the collector being readily set down in its normal position upon the floor at any point where it is to be used.
As shown in the drawings A is the collector which may be of any suitable form. In the present case it has vertical sides, an inclined top and a low rear end connecting with the sides. The front end is open and is preferably connected by a flexible webbing 2 with a fabric hood 8. This hood has its edge attached to the upper edge of the collector A, as shown at 4. The hood is extended to any desired extent, being narrowed into a sort of strap form as at 5, and this strap may be adjustably connected with the handle 6 of a broom 7 by a ring 8; and for Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23,1913. Serial No. 743,276.
the purpose of attachment this ring may have connected with it a strap, as shown at 9, which is adapted to engage with a buckle as at 10, whereby the length of the strap and the position of the hood 3 may be adjusted to any size of broom, and also to allow the broom a very free radius of action around the mouth of the collector.
In operation the collector may be set upon the carpet or floor, preferably having an inturned, slightly raised edge at the front, as shown at 11; the front resting snugly upon the floor and the raised inturned edge 11 serving to prevent the return of anything swept into the collector.
It will be seen that by the length of the strap 9 and the extension 5 of the hood, the broom may be moved around to a considerable radius outside of the direct front of the collector, and thus a quantity of dirt may be brought into the collector without movement. As the work proceeds, however, by withdrawing the broom the collector will be dragged after it, and thus a considerable area may be cleansed without difliculty. This flexible hood extending the full width above the opening in front of the collector will serve, in a great measure, to prevent the dust from rising, and will keep it measurably inclosed within the collector.
If it is desired to transport the broom and collector to any point, by lifting the broom the fabric hood serves as a connection with the front of the collector, so that the latter may be lifted and hang in such position that the dirt will all remain in the rear narrow portion thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A dust collector having an open front and upturned edge therefor, a flexible fabric material attached to the upper edge of the collector, said fabric forming a cover and being extended to a considerable length, a companion strap having a ring loosely and turnably fitting upon the lower end of a broom handle, said strap and fabric having a connection whereby the relative distance of the broom from the collecting device may be regulated.
2. The combination with an open mouthed dust collector, of a flexible fabric having its In testimony whereof I have hereunto set edge fixed along the upper edge of the open my hand in the presence of tWo subscribing 10 month of the collectoli, a 1strap cognection Witnesses.
