To'aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l[, FRANK J. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Uhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collecting- Bags for Vacuum'Cleaners, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to pro vide an improved form of construction for the bag or receptacle of avacuum sweeper or cleaner, whereby increased practicability and efliciency in the use thereof is obtained.
l-Ieretofore the bag which receives the dust from the outlet tube of the machine has been arranged in an inclined position and provided with a large opening at the upper end through which the dust can be discharged after it has been filled, the inlet opening being small and located at the lower end of the bag.
This form of construction isdisadva-ntageous in that the bag must be removed from the machine and turned upside down to re movethe dust. The present invention is designed to overcome this difficulty and also presents features preventing the dust from returning into the machine when fluctuations in pressure occur.
The invention further. comprises the combination and arrangement of parts and construction of details hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the. claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of the lower end; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of mouth; Figs. 5, '5, 7, are details thereof.
In these views A is the bag formed of closely woven fabrieor other flexible material. The upper end thereof is closed and the lower end is provided with asmall circular opening B through which the dust is projected into the bag by the action of the machine. A strip C of flexible cloth has one of its ends attached to the bag about the opening B and has its lateral edges attached to the side of the bag throughout the entire Specification of Letters Patent.

length of such strip, thus forming an inlet passageway for dust laden air whose upper end opens into the bag interior at a point above the lower end of the bag. lln the present embodiment one side of this passageway constitutes also the side of the bag at that point. The wall of this passageway being flexible and being free at its inner end as shown at C, this arrangement provides an automatically acting closing device or valve element for the bag when the pressure changes its direction from an inwardly tending current to an outwardly tending current.
If the inner extremity of the valve or the entire length thereof should be left free on all sides, a certain throbbing action of the valve when the machine is working as it throws itself from side to side in the bag would make such a noise as to be disagreeable to the user.
To make the removal of the contents of the-bag easy without removing it from the machine, an opening H is formed upon the lower side near the lower end of the bag. This opening extends across the bag and is provided with extended lips h, 71, which are closed with a clip J slidingly attached or of any convenient sort when the machine is in use; but which can readily be removed to discharge the contents of the bag.
The advantages of the improvements above enumerated are obvious in the great convenience in use thereby provided.
Tn Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 a preferred form of discharge opening for the bag is shown. Here K is a semicircular metal rim for one edge of the opening which is provided with a recess 7:. lln this recess is shown a wire L which is pivoted in the ends of the rim K by means of loose pivot pins M which permit the mouth to open but it will snap shut wvhenreleased, owlng to the spring action of the parts.
The rod L lies normally within the groove in the member K, and is preferably adapted to spring back into such position when the parts are relatively displaced by the movement of the rod L.
The edge of the bag is attached on one side to the rod L and on the other side to the member K. A. tight closure is made when the member L enters the groove K throughout its length.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
1. In a dust bag for vacuum cleaners, an elongated inlet for the dust laden air opening into the bag at a point above its lower end, the wall of which inlet is collapsible and connected "throughout substantially its entire length to the bag wall.
2. In a dust bag for vacuum cleaners, an elongated inlet for the dust laden air open ing into the bag at a point above its lower end, the wall of which inlet is collapsible and supported by being attached to the bag Wall.
3. A bag for collecting the discharge from a vacuum cleaner, said bag'provided with an inlet opening 'at one end and with an outlet opening adjacent thereto at the underside of said bag, a closure for said outlet opening, and a flexible member having one of its ends secured in said opening and having itsedges secured to one side of the bag throughout the entire length of said member so as to form an extension of said inlet within said bag.
4. A bag for collecting the discharge from a vacuum cleaner, said bag provided with an inlet opening at one end, and with a passageway leading from said inlet opening to 5. A dust bag for vacuum cleaners, comprising the bag proper, said hag being provided with an inlet for dust laden air and with an outlet for the removal of refuse, means for closing said outlet and a flexible member secured to said bag through substantially the entire length of said member to provide a conduit forming an extension of said inlet within said bag, said conduit opening into said bag at a point above the bottom thereof whereby there is formed a pocket for the collection of refuse.
