Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 29, 1910.
Application filed April 25, 1910. Serial No. 557,482.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr B. PATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham, in the county of Durham and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in spittoons or cus'pidors, and more particularly one from which its contents will not spill when it is overturned.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which will be inexpensive to produce, and strong, durable and eflicient in use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved spittoon; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
The body of my improved spittoon is preferably of cylindrical shape and comprises an annular upright side wall 1 which surrounds a concavo-convex bottom 2 having its convex side disposed uppermost. The top 3 is secured to the upper edge of the upright side wall 1 and is similar in shape to the bottom but has its concave side uppermost, and at its center is a circular inlet opening from which depends a deflecting tube 1. The lower end of the latter terminates adjacent to the center of the body and is preferably flared as shown. Supported within the body in spaced relation from the lower end of the deflecting tube a is a guard member 5 which in fact forms a false bottom for the device and is in the form of a concave-convex plate of slightly less diameter than the bottom 2. This guard plate or disk 5 may be supported from the bottom- 2, or from the top 3. As illustrated, it is supported from the top by means of two or more depending brackets 6 having bent ends secured to said parts, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The concavo-convex shape of the plate 5 prevents the liquid in the bottom portion of the body from passing out of the tube 4: should the device be turned upside down, and in order to prevent any water that may be on the convex side of the plate 5 from draining to the center of the plate and dropping out of the tube 4 when the device is inverted, I provide between the central portion of the plate 5 and the inner end of the tube 4 a supplemental guard plate 5 The latter is flat and circular in shape and it is preferably supported from the plate 5 by stamping from its opposite edges angular attaching flanges 5 which latter are soldered or otherwise secured to the plate 5, as clearly shown in the drawings. To permit the body of the spittoon to be cleaned, an outlet tube 7 may be arranged in the lower portion of its wall 1 and closed by a screw cap 8 or other removable closer.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by constructing the spittoon in this manner it will be entirely closed except at its inlet and outlet, and that the inlet is effectively guarded by the tube 4; and plate or member 5. By making the top and bottom of the shape shown and arranging them to oppose each other, it will be seen that should the device be overturned it will be impossible for the contents of the body to run out. The simple construction of the device enables it to be produced at a very small cost.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a body having a top and a bot tom of concavo-convex form, the bottom having its convex side uppermost, and the,
top having its concave side uppermost and formed with a central inlet opening, a surrounding upright wall uniting the top and bottom, a tube depending from the inlet opening in the top and terminating adjacent the center of the body, and means supported within the body in spaced relation from the inner or lower end of said tube for preventing the escape of liquid from the latter when the device is inverted.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body having a top and a bottom of concavo-convex form, the bottom having its convex side uppermost and the top having its concave side uppermost and formed with a central inlet opening, a surrounding upright wall uniting the top and bottom, a tube depending from the inlet opening in the top and terminating adjacent the center of the body, a concavo-convex plate supported within the body in spaced relation from the inner or lower end of said tube, and a fiat plate supported between the last mentioned plate and said tube and in spaced relation from the inner or lower end of said tube, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature 1n the presence of two wltnesses.
J. M. HUTSON, E. C. SIMPSON.
