SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,476, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed Jnne i, 1886. Serial No. 204,131. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS GERSDORFF, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Funnels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
. exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inwhich Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same in position for use, and Fig. 3is a horizontal section of the nozzle upon line w x of Fig. 2.

In the use of funnels much difficulty is experienced when filling a vessel through the opening through which air must escape, and various constructions of nozzle-such as the formation within its outer side of vertical or spiral airgrooves, double walls, &chave been employed; but each of such constructions has proved defective, either from the liability of the air-passages to become clogged, or because of the cost of the article and its liability to get out of order.
The design of my invention is to furnish in a simple, durable, and efficient form a funnel which shall be as cheaply constructed as are those ordinarily used; and to this end said invention consists, principally, in a funnel provided with anozzle which has in cross-section the form of a triangle, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, as anew article of manufacture, in a funnel which has its upper edge curved upward and inward, and a nozzle that in cross-section has the form of a triangle, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the body of a funnel, which has the usual form, except that its upper edge, a, has an upward said vessel.

When the funnel thus constructed is used, its nozzle, in consequence of its triangular form,will find afirmbearing withinthe opening I) of a vessel, B, and between the sides of the latter and each of the faces of said nozzle will be left a passage of such size and shape as to furnish a perfect escape for the air which is displaced by the liquid that is poured into The air-vents have such size as to prevent them from being choked by the spattering of the liquid within said vessel, as would be the case were said vents smaller in size, even though they were more numerous and in the aggregate had alarger area.
The inward-turned upper edge of the funnel prevents the usual slopping out of liquid should there be a want of care in pouring the same, and enables the'device to be safely used in places where the ordinary funnel could not be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A funnel provided with. a nozzle which has in crossseetion the form of a triangle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. As a nen article of manufacture, a funnel which has its upper edge curved upward and inward, and a nozzle that in cross-section has the form of a triangle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
