CHARLES D. BAooNEaN-n JOHN Fox, on nsn ua, n rsnInnfi Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181.896, dated September 5, 1876; application filed May 1,1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES D. BACON and JOHN Fox, both of the city of Nashua, county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards or Protectors for Sleeve Button and Stud, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sleeve button or stud with our improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a sleeve button or stud with the guard or protector shown in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the guard or protector detached from the sleeve button or stud. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of a modified form of the guard or protector.
It is well known that when cuffs, shirtbosoms, and other kindred articles, in which sleeve buttons or studs are employed, have become mussed or soiled, they part with a large amount of the starch which has been incorporated in them while undergoing the process of laundering, and become flimsy to such an extent that the buttons or studs employed therein are exceedingly liable to drop out and become lost, unless some special provision is made to prevent them from so doing.
It is also well known that the sleeve buttons and studs now generally in use have their two heads united together by a box or shaft extending between them, and which is somewhat longer than the distance through the articles to which they are applied, so that the parts of the said article are not held in close proximity, and the fit of the same, in consequence, is greatly impaired.
The object of our invention is to remedy these defects, and to provide a cheap and durable guard or protector, which can be readily applied to any of that class of buttons or studs that are provided with two heads; and to this end, the invention consists in forming a guard or protector of any elastic or suitable material, of such a form that it shall completely envelope the inner end of the button or stud in such a manner as to materially enlarge the diameter of such end or head, and. at the same time to fill up the space between this head and the article in which the button or stud is employed.
Referring to the drawings, A is a sleeve button or stud, of any suitable or ornamental design, having the two heads a a, which are connected together by the stud or shaft 0. B is the guard or protector, which is formed of any elastic material, but preferably of indiarubber or gutta-percha. This guard is formed with a chamber or recess, for the reception of the button-head a, and has a slit, d, in its upper side, by means of which the guard or protector is applied to the button or stud, or detached therefrom.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 we have shown a style of guard or protector, which is adopted to entirely envelope the head of the button or stud, and which is the form we prefer; but it is evident that this exact form is not actually necessary to the successful operation of the device, as the object sought to be accomplished is simply to enlarge the diameter of the head of the button or stud to such an extent that it will exceed the dimensions of the buttonhole through which it has passed, and at the same time fill up or reduce the space between the head of the said button or stud. We have accordingly, in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, shown a modified form of the guard or protector, wherein the back is entirely removed, leaving the head of the button completely exposed. This form answers the same purpose as the design shown in the other figures of the drawing, and may, in some cases, be preferable to it.
In practice the button or stud to which the guard or protector is applied is passed through the desired article or garment, and adjusted in its proper place where the guard or protector is applied, completely filling up the space between the head of the button or stud and the article or garment secured thereby, confining its parts closely together, and materially increasing the fit of said article, while at the same time the head of the button is en.- larged to such an extent that it cannot be Withdrawn from its button-hole until the guard or protector has been removed.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. An elastic guard or protector for-a sleeve" .In testimony t-hat' we claim the above 'we button or stud, having a recess or; chamber have subscribed oiir nameskinipresence of two for the head of the button or stud, and a slit witnesses. by means of which the said guard or protector may be applied to the head of a button '01" CHARLES DEAN BACON. d, e e, a -J N -V 2.'Inconibination with th'e'b'utton O'r stu d A, provided with the head a, the elastic guard Witnesses: 0r protector B, having-the recessfor the hea d OHAL-RLEsH.
