To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY O. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Studs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a device for clamping buttons and the like, and is particularly adapted for studs, being made of two members, one a head member and the other a latch member, the head member hav ing a shank or post which extends through the button-hole or button-holes of the garment on which it is worn, the latch member being detachable and having a latch which passes through an eye in the end of the post of the head member to lock the parts together. Separable studs of this kind have been made before, but my invention rests in the particular form of latch member which has been devised to provide a latch member that is smooth on its outer surface, presents very little surface for the catching of threads or other parts of clothing, and also one which isconstructed to prevent the entrance of any considerable quantity of dirt into the latch member. At the same time the latch member has been devised with a view to its manufacture in a cheap way, the structure being one that is adapted for manipulation by the methods now employed in the manufacture of jewelry so that whenthe latch member is made as shown in this application its production is cheapened and it is quickly made, being sub ected to but few actions by dies or similar elements to formit.

The invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the stud. Fig. 2 is a front view of the latch member. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3, 3, in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the latch member in vertical section showing the latch in elevation, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch member.

The invention consists of any desired form of head member having a head 10 and an eye 11 on the back thereof, the eye being preferably arranged on the end of a post 12-, although any other structure can be employed as long as sufficient space is left between the eye 11 and the head 10 to receive the goods in which the buttonhole is placed through which the eye is passed.

The latch member consists of a tube which is subjected to the action of machine elements, such as dies, to reduce the ends 13 and 14, leaving the center or the approximate center of the latch member its normal or previous diameter so that a bulged portion 15 is provided-which is wide enough to receive the eye 11, having a slot 16 to permit the entrance of the eye into the latch member, the slot l6 being made to extend substantially half way around the bulged portion of the latch member and being high enough to receive the eye with a little room to spare, but making a close enough fit to prevent the entrance of dirt in any considerable quantity into the latch member. The eye is of substantially the same diameter as the bulged portion of the latch member and closes the slot when it is in place.

Sliding in the latch member is a latch 17 which is adapted to pass through the eye when the eye is in place in the bulged. portion 15 of the latch member, the latch having a narrow stem 18 which passes down through the bottom of the narrowed end it of the latch member or tube, said stem having a head 19 on its projecting end to provide for its manipulation. The latch is normally held closed by a spring 20 which abuts at one end on the end of the tube or latch member, and on its other end against the latch 17. When it is desired to either separate or connect the two members, the head 19 is pulled down so that the top of the latch 17 is below the opening 16 and then the eye 11 can be either inserted or withdrawn, as the case may be. WVhen the eye is in place or has been removed, the head 19 is released and the spring 20 snaps the latch shut again. The narrowed end 13 of the latch member is preferably closed as at 21.

The construction illustrated and described herein provides a smooth exterior and occupies a minimum space which is desirable especially in shirt studs where any bulging on the inside of the shirt is soon felt by the wearer.

When the members are connected or assembled they form a comparatively closed structure so that very little chance is given for the introduction of dirt or threads to clog or interfere in any Way With the Working of the latch. It is also again pointed out that the latch member has been devised particularly to make it easily subject to processes of handling tubular material, and the late? member is easily, quickly and cheaply ma e. Having thus described my invention, What I claim is A stud consisting of a head member having a post on the back thereof, the post terminating in an eye, a latch member consisting of a tubular portion having a circumferentially bulged part intermediate of its length, the ends being closed and the bulged part being closed except for a transverse end of the stem, anda spring abutting at one end on the latch and at the other end -on the end of the latch member to normally hold the latch shut.
