BUTTON FOR WEARING-APPAREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9,1919.
Application filed December 14, 1918. Serial No. 266,839.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Apron Saarinen lVnLrLY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at ROSQlll'ltllQ, Corbally, Limerick, Co. Limerick, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons for lVearing-Apparel, of which the following a specification.
This inve11tion relates to improvements in buttons for wearing apparel, and has for its object to provide a button which. does not require to be sewn on to the fabric which may be easily applied to or detached from the latter when desired andwhich eliminates the inconveniences associated with the known types of buttons which frequently break away from their fasteuings or require to be re-sewn on.
According to my said invention I provide a pair of studs slidably fitted one in the other the inner or malestud havin at its end an elastic or flexible protu ierance adapted to slidably fit in a longitudinal channel in the female stud which latter is provided adjacent to or near the end of the said channel with a recess into which is sprung and secured in position the said protuberance when the female stud slig ltly turned, thereby looking the pair of studs in position. The inner or male stud is provided with a flange which lies against the inner fabric or material, the head of this stud projecting through the said fabric, and the outer or female stud is provided with a corresponding flange which lies against the outer or overlapping fabri the head: of the female stud passingthrough the button hole in the outer fabric, the arrangement being such that in order to fasten together overlapping fabrics or material such as coats or Waist-coats or the like the inner or male stud is passed into the button hole while the outer or female stud is slid over the inner stud and sligl'itly turned, to button the Waist-coat or coat or the like in position. It will thus be seen that the said button may easily be detached from the fabric for the purpose of washing, mangling or ironing of the latter; and when in position is easily operated and is of compact and substantial construction.
In a modification, said. button comprises a pair of studs in which. the male stud has a longitudinally split tubular shank to produce a spring action with an opposite protuberance near end of said shank adapted to slidably fit in a longitudinal channel of a corresponding tubular female stud having at the end of said channel a transverse channel and an adjacent recess into which channel said protuberance is adapted to be twisted and sprung into said recess so as to lock said studs togetl'ier in order to similarly fasten together coats or Waistcoats or the like.
It has previously been proposed to employ a male stud having at its end a protuberance or in adapted to slidably fit in a longitudinal channel or slot in a corresponding female stud so that by a twisting motion of either stud, the protuberance or pin is retated into a recess or slot and secured therein by the assistance or employment of a spiral or leaf spring, each stud l'iaving a flanged or headed end to engage against the fabric or material.
According to my present invention, no spiral or leaf springs are employed as the protuberance or stem of the male stud is adapted to form its own spring thus making for greater simplicity and efficiency and lower cost in production; and consequently there is no necessity for pressing the studs into engagement against the action of spi al. or leaf spring? as hitherto.
The said button constructed and adapted to operate in accordance with my said invention is more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanyinodrawing; and the same reference. num ers are used for the same parts throughout.
Inthe drawing Figure 1 shows a sectional elevation through the complete button in position on overlapping fabrics, and Fig. 2, shows a plan view of the inner stud. Fig. 3 shows a plan View of the outer stud. Fi l. is an outside elevation of a modified form of male stud. Fig. 5 is an outside elevation of a modified form of female stud, and Fi 6 is a plan of the parts shown in Fig. 5.
Said improvements in buttons for Wearing apparel comprise an inner or male stud 1 havin at its end a protuberance 2 adapted to slic ably lit in a longitudinal channel 3 in a female or outer stud 4, and by a twisting motion of the latter adapted to be sprung into and secured in a recess 5 in the stud 4t adjacent to or near the end of the channel 3, the male or inner stud 1 having a flange 6 adapted to lie against the inner fabric or material 7, and having its head with said protuberance adapted to pass through a hole such as 8 in the inner fabric of material 7, and through the button hole 9 of the over- -lapping fabric or material 10. The outer or female stud 1 has a corresponding flange 11. adapted to lie against the outer or overlapping fabric or material 10, so that when the two studs are in the locked position they form a secure button to hold the parts of clothing or the like together. It will be readily understood that to button the parts together when the inner stud is in position it is only necessary to pass the outer stud over the inner stud so that the protuberance slides through the channel 3 until it reaches and is twisted into the recess 5 by slightly turning the flange 11 in the required direction, and by reversing the operation a pair of studs are easily detached from the over lapping fabric or material. As the fabric is flexible the stud 1 with its protuberance 2 may be easily pulled through or inserted through the hole 8.
The stud 1 is preferably made hollow and of thin metal so that the protuberance 2 is easily forced through the channel 3 and sprung into the recess 5 by a twisting motion of the flange 11. For the sake of clearness the complete button and part of the fabric are shown in a large view. The outer or female stud I is also made out of thin metal so as to be more easily worked into the required shape; and the flange 11 may be solid in the center as shown, or may be hollow if desired.
By the application of this button it will be seen that no sewing on is required while the stud 1 may be frictionally held in or detached from the inner fabric when desired, and the outer stud a may be readily passed into the button-hole 9 or its equivalent when fixing in position. Furthermore, the complete button may be used many times over in various suits or coats or the like by transferring from one to the other with the greatest ease, and owing to the grip afl'orded by the flange 6 on the inner fabric or material there is no danger of pulling through the latter as sometimes happens in a case where the ordinary sewn on button is used.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 4:, 5 and 6, I employ a pair of studs, 1 and at in which the male stud 1 has longitudinally a split tubular shank at 13 to produce a spring action with an oppo site protuberance 2. near end of said shank and adapted to slidably fit in a longitudinal channel 3 of a corresponding tubular fe male stud 1-- having at the end of said channel a transverse channel 12 and an adjacent recess 5 into which said protuberance is adapted to be twisted and sprung into said recess so as to lock said studs together in which case the small end of the female stud 4c lies adjacent to the inside of thefiange 6which is then opposite the flange 11. In this case, the female stud 4 is preferably the inner stud for securing in the inner hole of overlapping fabrics, but may be reversed if desired.
Having described my invention, I claim A button of the kind described for wearing apparel and the like comprising a tubular female stud having a longitudinal chan nel, a transverse channel with an adjacent recess at the end of said longitudinal chan-- nel, a corresponding male stud having a longitudinally split tubular shank adapted to produce a spring action with a protuberance formed near the end of said shank, said male stud bein adapted to slidably fit in said female stu' having said protuberance adapted to slidably fit in said longitudinal channel and by twisting the studs relatively to one another to be moved into said transverse channel and sprung into said recess so as to lock said studs together.
Signed by me this 28rd day of November,
ALTON SAMUEL IVELPLY. Witnesses:
