UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
AARON RICE, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WALTER HEYWOOD CHAIR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,956, dated July 18, 1876; application filed June 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, AARON RIoE, of Fitchburg, Worcester county, Massachusetts, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a perspective view of a chair to which my improvement has been applied, and Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken through line 00 a, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the backs of chairs, especially those known in the trade as ladies crown dining chairs and York diningchairs, in such a way as to make them less liable to come apart, and thus stronger and better.
The invention consists in an improved chair in which the upper ends of the back posts are connected with the ends of the back-top with described.
A are the legs. B are the rounds. Cis the seat-frame of the chair. D are the back-posts. E is the back-top, and F the back-rounds. The upper ends of the back-posts D are connected with the ends of the back-top E by a ton gue-and-groove joint, which may be straight or dovetailed, as may be desired. This construction prevents the back-posts and the back-top from working loose and coming apart, and thus makes the chairs stronger and more durable without increasing the cost of manufacture.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved chair, in which the upper ends of the back-posts D are connected with the ends of the back-top E with a tongue-andgroove joint, substantially as herein shown and described.
