Description

Feb. 17, 1931. H. A. HAYDEN BINDER FOR LOOSE LEAVES Filed March 5, 1927 ATTORNE Patented Feb. 17,1931 '2 HOWARD A. HAYDEN, OF DETROIT,MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF PATENT: OFFICE T Antenna B; HULSAPPLE, OF PONTIAC MICHIGAN BINDER non Loosn LEAVES Application filed March 5,
The present invention relates to paperfiles and binders and particularly-to binders for loose leaves such as letters or similar leaves.
Among the objects of therinvention is a binder made up of small units which may be built up to volumes of considerable size but which will open at a convenient number of places and lie flat.
7 Another object is a binder in which the sheets, sometimes of very thin'paper, may be fined so that the tendency to tear at the perforations is substantially eliminated.
Another object is a binder in which the sheets may be so fixed as to be not removable without mutilation or destruction.
Still other objects will readily occur to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a perspective view of a binding post strip with the post cover piece swung back;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of another member of the binder;
Fig. 3 is section on line 33 of Fig. 1 with cover closed;
Fig. 4 is a cross section showing the building up of the units;
Fig. 5 is a perspective View showing a second unit being built up on another;
Fig. 6 isa plan view of one of the paper fasteners;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the nuts. V
As indicated, the device comprises a strip of metal 10 having threaded post-s11 fixed thereto at suitable intervals and having one edge notched and with the intervening tongues rolled to form hinge sections 12.
In binding the leaves or sheets, these will of course be perforated to slip over the posts 11 and'will be secured thereon by pushing down over each of several posts a respective one of the washers 15 shown in Fi 6. These washers will-be of very thin steel preferably about the thickness of a good bond paper, say from .008 to .008 of an inch. The washers will be perforated as shown with three'intersecting holes with the center one 16. slightly smaller in diameter than theoutside diameter sections 12 and secured, thereto by removable 70;
1927. Serial No. 172,969.
of posts 11. Such washers will be comparatively easily pushed down over posts 11 but will be difficult if not impossible to remove.
It is proposed to secure on strip 10 by these washers one or two sheets at a time and to stagger the washers for obvious reasons. i For example, the first sheet may be held'by wash- 'ers on the first, third and fifth posts and the next by washers on the second, fourthand. sixth posts. 7 s During the filling of aunit, the posts will preferably be covered by the section hinged to strip 10. This section consists of a metal'strip bent longitudinally at substantially a right angle to form a depending flange portion 21 which is notched and theintervening tongues'rolled as at 22 to form hinge sections adapted to be aligned between pintles 23'. This makes a cover strip that readily swings over the ends of posts 11 or out of the way when desired, and as each unit is completed, the strip 20will be removed and secured in position on the succeeding unit. a
After one of the units such as shown in Fig. 1 has been filled, that is, when the leaves or sheets 25 have reached to near the top of posts 11, a supplementary strip which is reallythe bottom of a new hinge isput over the posts 11 andnuts 31 screwed down tightly thereon. This strip 30 consists of thin metal such as that of strip 10 and is provided 7 with the same. nuinberof holes 32-.astherej-n are posts 11; This strip is also notched along one edge and the intervening tongues 33 rolled to form hinge sections. These hinge sections 33 as well as sections 12 and 22 will course after having been filled. .Volu'mes may, therefore, be built up of any number of units and as these are hinged together, the
volume will open and lie flat at any hinge,
leaving onlya few leaves to be bent. When a desired number of units have been completed, a perforated finishing strip such as strip 30 Without the hinge sections may be used to complete the top unit if desired.
Having now described the invention and the preferred form of embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that said invention is to be limited not to the specific details herein set forth and illustrated, but only by the scope of the claims which follow.
I claim V 1. A binder for loose sheets comprisng a metal strip having a plurality of posts fixed thereto, means for securing individual perforated sheets on said posts, said means being substantially of the same thickness as a sheet, and a cover member hinged to said post strip and extending over the tops of said posts.
2. A binder for loose sheets comprising a I metal strip having a plurality of posts fixed thereto, means for successively securing individual perforated sheets on said posts, said means being substantially of the same thickness as a sheet, and a cover member hinged to said post strip and extending over the tops of said posts.
3. A binder for loose sheets comprising a metal strip having a plurality of posts fixed thereto and means for successively securing individual perforated sheets on said posts, said means being substantially of the same thickness as a sheet.
4. A binder for loose sheets comprising a metal strip having a plurality of posts fixed thereto, means for successively securing individual perforated sheets on said posts,
said means being substantially of the same thickness as a sheet, a supplementary strip adapted to fit on said posts over said sheets and means for securing said strip to said posts.
5. A binder for loose sheets comprising a metal strip having a plurality of posts fixed thereto, means for successively securing individual perforated sheets on said posts, a supplementary strip adapted to fit on said posts over said sheets and means for securing said strip to said posts, said supplementary strips being provided With hinge sections whereby a second identical post strip may be hinged to said supplementary strip.
6. A binder for loose sheets comprising a metal strip having a plurality of posts fixed thereto, means for successively securing individual perforated sheets on said posts, a supplementary strip adapted to fit on said posts over said sheets and means for securing said strip to said posts, said supplementary strips being provided with hinge sections whereby a second identical post strip may be hinged to said supplementary strip, and a cover strip adapted to be hinged to said second post strip.
