PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID W. LOW, 0]! LOB ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
FILING DEVICE.
Application filed larch 24, 1924. Serial No. 701,489.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID W. Low, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to filing devices, and provides for filing devices which may be constructed to hold letters, clippings, receipts, maps, drawings, specifications, photographs, documents, phonograph records, bills, catalogues, pamphlets, magazines, books, and any other articles or papers used in filing systems.
An object of this invention is the provision of a file which may be in the form of a drawer, case, book, portfolio, etc.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a filing device comprising a series of pockets, each pocket being hinged at its open side, so as to form a cover for an adjacent pocket and thereby closes the same.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a file comprising a series of pockets arranged in steps so as to expose to view, When the fileis opened, a portion of each pocket adapted to be indexed.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a file comprising a series of containers spaced apart to allow for expansion as'articles are filed in the same.
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantagesas may subsequently appear, this invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIgure 1 is an end view of a file embodying my invention, the file being in book form, the upper cover of the book being thrown back,
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the book closed,
. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail, showing the method of mounting a series of pockets,
Fig. 4: is a plan view of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the file shown in Fig. 2, when the same is open between leaves.
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 10 indicates a file cover comprising a back 11,
to which are secured each of which is mounted in stepped or shufiled formation a series of pockets 13 of envelope form.
It is to be understood that the term pocket, as used in this specification, includes any form of container, or even plain sheets with or without means for fastening papers or other articles to the sheets.
The pockets 13 are hingedly mounted on the leaves 12 and at their open sides, each pocket 13 having an extension 13 which is afiixed to the leaf 12 and to the extension 13 of the underlying pocket.
The pockets 13 of each series are hinged at their open sides so that the back of each pocket acts as a cover or closure for the sub .jaccnt pocket and each of the leaves 12 may act as a cover pocket. 1
The pockets 13 are preferably of greater length at their open sides than the length of the leaf, so that the ends of the pockets extending be mad the leaves may be raised and thereby a ord easier entrance for an article being placed in the pocket.
The pockets 13 are arranged in stepped or shufiled formation so that a portion of each pocket along one edge thereof may be exosed to view, and the exposed portion may ear indices, indicating the nature of the contents of each pocket. The lowermost or closure for its subjacent pocket of each series overhangs all the pock ets mounted on the subjacent eaf except the lowermost pocket on said subjacent leaf, and the lowermost pockets on each leaf are in alignment. with each other when the book spaced leaves 12, on
is closed. The lowermost pocket of each.
series may hear an index, eral classification of the in its series.
indicating the genmaterial contained Tn embodying my invention upon a file.
drawer, I provide a drawer, the front end of which is hinged and the leaves may be secured to the hinged front end. The pockets may be hinged to the leaves in a'similar manner to that shown upon the drawing.
While I have herein described one form of my invention, modifications thereof may be devised without departing from the spirit thereof, and it is to be understood that such modifications come within the scope of this invention.
llltl What is claimed is:
1. A file comprising a cover provided with a back portion, a series of leaves secured to said back portion, and pockets mounted upon each leaf and hinged thereto, said pockets being so arranged that each pocket -on a given leaf exposes a portion of each of the subjacent pockets 'on that leaf.
2. A file comprising a cover provided with a back portion, a series of leaves secured to said back portion, and a series of pockets mounted upon each leaf, each pocket having an extension secured to the leaf upon which it is mounted and to the corresponding extension of an adjacent pocket upon that leaf. 3. A file comprising a cover provided with a back portion, a series of leaves secured to said back portion, and a series of ockets mounted upon each leaf, each pocket iiaving an extension secured to the leaf upon which it is mounted and to the correspond ing extension of an adjacent pocket upon that leaf, said pockets being arranged in stepped relation exposing a portion of the face of each pocket.
4. A file comprising a cover provided with a back portion, a series of leaves secured to said back portion, and a series of pockets mounted upon each leaf and so arranged that a portion of each pocket upon a given leaf is exposed, but the pockets on the leaves therebelow are hidden.
5. A file comprising a cover provided with a back portion, a series of leaves secured to said back portion, pockets hingedlv secured to each of said leaves, said pockets being arranged in stepped relation upon each leaf, the lowermost pocket upon each of the leaves being in alignment with the lowermost pockets upon the other leaves.
6. A file comprising a cover provided with a back portion, a series of leaves secured to said back portion, and pockets hingedly secured to each of said leaves. said pockets being arranged in stepped relation upon a iven leaf, the open side of each pocket bein disposed towards said back portion;
A file comprising a cover, a plurality of pockets within said cover. and means for securing said pockets to said cover in such positions that when said cover is turned back from normally closed position, portions of the faces of a portion of said'pockets are exposed.
' 8. A file comprising a series of leaves, pockets mounted on each leaf and hinged thereto, each pocket being hinged at its open edge so as to form a cover for an adjacent pocket, the pockets on each leaf being arranged in steps so as to expose to view at one time a portion of everv pocxet mounted on a given leaf.
9. A file comprising a series of leaves,
pockets mounted on each leaf and hinged thereto, each pocket being hinged at its open side so as to form a cover for an adiacent pocket, the pockets on each leaf being arranged in steps so as to expose to view at one time a portion of ever3 pocket mounted on a given leaf, each leaf being of less length than the lengthof the pocket at the hinged sides of the latter.
11. A file comprising a cover, a series of leaves secured to said cover. a series of pockets secured to each of said leaves bv means of an extension formed on each of said pockets, said extensions being of less length than the pockets permitting said pockets to expand.
12. A file comprising a cover, a series of pockets within. said cover, said pockets having extensions formed upon the open edges thereof forming means for securing said pockets within the cover. said extensions being of less length than the pockets permitting said pockets to expand.
