IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,175, dated June 27, 1876; application filed April 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. EAGER, of Boston, in the county of Sutfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new plate.
My invention relates to a new and improved mode of adjusting the waistband of garments to persons having different-sized waists. The improvement is equally applicable to overshirts, blouses, pants, drawers, overalls, and other kinds of garments, and is more particularly applicable to that class of garments provided with a hollow waistband in which is arranged the strap or cord through which the adjustment is effected, and for which Letters Patent have been heretofore granted to me.
The improvement consists, first, in a new and improved fastening device, consisting of a cam-clamp, by means of which the securing ot' the strap at any point when once adjusted is more readily effected than by a buckle; secondly, it consists in.combining, with a strap or cord and waistband of a garment, a camclamp so constructed and arranged as that the strap or cord may be readily secured at any point required, so as to secure a proper adjustment of the garment to the wearer, and that without tearing or lacerating the strap or cord in any degree.
'To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will describe its parts in detail.
In the drawing, my improved clamp is shown in connection with a pair of overalls, having a hollow waistband, a, in which the strap or cord 0 is arranged and secured at one end, while the other end is made to project through an opening, b, made therein at the other side of the garment.
In Fig. 2 the strap 0 is used, while in Fig. 3 a cord, 0, is used.
Near to the opening b of the waistband is arranged and secured the cam-clamp, which consists of a frame-plate, d, to which is rigidly secured a*staple, e, which carries a roller, f, eccentrically pivoted on the upper side of the staple. Roller fis provided with a lever or handle, g, by means of which to operate it. Thus constructed it is secbred to the waistband a by means of a rivet, h.
When the cam f is intended to be used in connection with a cord, as represented in Figs. 1 and 3, it is provided with a circumferential groove, '5, more clearly shown in Fig. 2. This groove serves to confine the cord to the central portion of the cam, and thus prevents its becoming jammed at. the ends between them and the staple.
When the cam f is used in connection with a strap, it need not necessarily be provided with groove '5, but it is preferred to make it so, as it can then be used in connection with either, as desired.
In Fig. 2 the surface of the cam is represented as being slightly roughened or milled,
but it answers possibly a better purpose to be v plain or smooth.
The operation is simple. When it is desired to adjust the garment, the pressure of the cam is released by turning it back, as in Fig. 2; the cord or strap is then inserted between it and the frame-plate d, and drawn until the garment has been properly adjusted. The cam is then turned down, as in Fig. 3, and the strap is secured. Any back drag on the strap, it is obvious, will merely serve to clamp it tighter. It will also be obvious that the cam-clamp may be used in'connection with certain cords, and for other useful purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a cam-clamp, substantially as described, with a hollow waistband and adjusting strap of a garment, for the purpose set forth.
