SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,865, datecl May 5, 1903.
Application filed May 12, 1902. Serial No. 106,875. (No model.)
lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of suspenders, and has particular relation to that class of suspenders the depending end straps of which'are adapted to be provided with devices permitting their engagement with suitable catches on the inner side of'a trousers-band.
The objects of my invention are to provide suspenders of this class of simple, neat, and durable construction, to provide improved means for connecting the end straps with the main or shoulder straps of the suspenders, to provide im'proved'means for securing in connection With the depending end straps a projecting button, and to produce other'improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. o These objects I aooomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved suspenders. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the outer side of one of the rear end straps, showing its connection with one of the main or shoulder straps; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line a; a; of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ desirable Widths of main or shoulder straps 1 of suitable fabric and preferably containing elastic, so as to permit of the stretching of the same to a desirable degree. The rear portions of these straps 1 are crossed and firmly sewed or bound in connection with eachother, as indicated at 2 The front ends of the straps 1 are turned to form the usual loop portions 3, and-the upturned ends are adj ustably held in engagement with the straps 1 through the medium of suitable clamps or buckles 4. Depending from each of the loops 3 is a suitable form of double keeper 5, in the lower loop of which is supported centrally the front end strap 6.
From the rear end of each of the straps 1 said strap. Over this inwardly-bent portion S of the strap 1 and above the same is secured by sewing the tapering end of the outer member of the strap 7, whilethe rear member thereof is similarly secured to the rear side of said strap. The lower end portion of each of the doubled end straps 7 has secured therein by stitching through'the members of said end straps about the same an oblong buttonplate 9, this button-plate having extending outwardly therefrorn near its lower end a button neck or shank 10, terminating in a suitable rounded head 11. I also similarlysecure in the lower end portions of each of the de pending members 1 of the end straps 6 asimilar button-plate, froin 'the lower portion of which projects a button 12.
The suspenders above described are adapted to be worn in the usual manner, with the main straps 1 running over the shoulders; but they are pa'rticularly designed to be worn under the outer shirt, so that in making a connection between the projecting buttons 11 and 12 with suitable button catches or engaging devices on the inner side of the trousers-band the goods forming the outer shirt is forced into the'catch with the button, and in this operation it will be understood that the elongated button -containing plates, such as are indicated at 9, may be grasped by the fingers of the handvand the button readily guided into the catch at the proper point, It will also be observed that in the connection of the Suspender-ends 7 with the main straps the upper ends of these double ends are made to embrace opposite sides of the main-strapends and that the lower ends of the latter are strengthened by the inwardly-bent portions 8.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
sas es ber of each of said straps 7 being thus secured 10 over the inturned sides of the end portion of the main strap and a button-carrying plate completely incased in the outer end of each of said straps 7, substantially as specified.
RICHARD T. CLARKE. In presence of A. L. PHELPS, W. L. MoRnoW.
