IMPROVEMENT lN OVERALLS AND OTHER GARMEN TS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,174, dated J une 27, 1876; application filed v April 29, 1876.

. of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls and other garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a pair of overalls to which my improvement has been applied, and Fig. 2 horizontal section through the waistband of the same. Fig. 3 represents a view in perspective of the clasp detached.

My improvement relates more particularly to that class of garments patented to me which have hollow waistbands, provided with a strap, through which and the medium of a buckle the garment is adjusted to the waists of persons of different sizes. The buckle, in some respects, is not as convenient as might be desired, requiring, as a rule, the use of both hands in making the adjustment.

The object of this improvement is to reme dy that trouble; and it consists in combining, with the waistband of a garment, and with an adjusting-strap, a spring detent-clasp, so constructed that, while giving free passage to the strap in the act of tightening the garment, will automatically prevent its retraction.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will describe its parts in detail. 7

My improvement is intended to be applied to any and all kinds of garments provided with a wai: tband, such as overshirts, blouses, pants, draws, overalls, &c.

In the drawing it is represented as being applied to a pair of overalls, provided with a hollow waistband, a, in which one end I) of a strap, 0, is secured to its inner end on one side of the garment, while the other end of the strap is made to protrude through an opening, (1, in the waistband, on the other side of the garment. Immediately adjoining the opening (1, to the front part of the Waistband, is secured a frameplate, e, carrying a loop or blank buckle,f, and which is rigidly secured to the frame-plate e. To the projecting side of the blank f is hinged a broad plate, g, which is-so bent as to present a curved, flattened surface, running at its free end in a nearly parallel plane with frameplate 6, when depressed upon the latter or the interposedstrap. The inner face of camplate 9 is provided with a number of raised .teeth or sharp points, all arranged to profree end of the spring is made to bear against the front end of the blank buckle f, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Thus arranged the tendency of the spring is to force cam-plate 9 against the strap'c.

The operation is obvious. The end of the strap 0, which projects from the opening in the waistband, is passed through the loop or blank buckle f and drawn suliiciently tight to adjust the waistband of the garment to the wearer. It is then released, when the action of the spring '0' on plate y will force the teeth of the latter against the outer surface ot the strap, and hold it securely in place.

When it is desired to loosen the strap, as in case of its being too tight, all that is necessary to be done is to raise plate 9 with the finger and draw on the waistband of the garment, and the act is accomplished. Plate g, on being released from the hand, is again depressed by spring t on the strap, and is again ready for use.

Having described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the waistband of a garment provided with a strap, an automatic detent-clamp, the movable clamp-plate of which is armed with teeth on its under side, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
